I have set hdparm -d1 /dev/hda. Any other methods to tuneup the system?
thanks much!

Not into asking easy questions huh?
First what distro are you using,
second what hardware do you have,
what app are you trying to tweak,
there are more, but that will do for now.

The easy answers, turn off unnecessary services,
use HDPARM...IF NECESSARY...the newer distros will tweak it for you, plus you are missing a couple possible switches to hdparm there, read the man.

I am using redhat 7.0 on PIII 700 and 256MB ram laptop. I want to tune up the overall speed and performance of it. I have turned off some unused services. What else could I do?
What other parameters should I use in hdparm other than -d?
I have read the man page in hdparm but I know very few on their exact meanings.
Please help! thanks!

Good info, I would first suggest downloading and installing 7.2, but I digress. Overall speed, finish killing uneeded services, look them up and see which ones you don't use. Several options in hdparm include setting the udma interface. setting multicount to 16 also helps
here is an example:
hdparm -X66 -d1 -u1 -m16 -c3 -k1 /dev/hda

here, the dma mode is set to ata66, dma on,mulitcount to 16, sync to 32 and keep is on. This one doubled my harddrive access but mileage varies.
Do a lookup or search on this site for info on what services to kill off and happy hunting. Your window manager will also affect performance greatly, gnome and K are great, beautiful even, but a little on the windows side of sluggish for most. Something light like blackbox will improve your perception of speed considerably.
