If you had 2.9.5 or something, I'd suggest to return to it. Some programs don't compile with 3.x anyway. But that is only MY perspective.

yes, i had 3.x, but some packages didn't compile, so i wanted to update rpm
i downloaded the .tar.gz (cant install rpms without rpm...). then i extracted the files... it createt a "bin", "etc" and "usr" directory in my home directory. is this right? i doubt it. it must be compiled, right?

fateswarm is way off on this one - he is thinking of gcc (and it's 2.95.x)

So, even with the old version of RPM you couldn't install anything? Because there supposedly is a version of RPM that you can update to v4 using a v3 RPM, though I have my doubts.

Hi, I am not sure wheter this is really related but ever since I upgraded my RH7.1 to 7.2 I have not been able to install or update any rpm.

The reason why I am not sure this is related is that I mostly use the GUI for KDE "package manager", but I can not install rpm's from a command line either...

Maybe you should have gunzipped and untarred it in the root ' / ' directory. Copy the file to the root ' / ' directory and try again.

You should probably find a rpm tar.gz file version of your original rpm and try to install it like I said above.
