You may have a bad CD image. If that's the case, you'd have to go and download it again and burn a new copy of FC4. That's the only reasonable explanation I could think of for you.

I don't think so i've downloaded and burned serveral images from differnt mirrors at differnt burn speeds on differnt cds, eve did an upgrade from yum

Hm, well you may want to check for certain boot arguments to try. For example, in some cases you can place an argument right before you boot off the CD to use a certain video module or other options to help out. Though it is odd it happens both on the text and graphical installations, that would be my next idea to try.

well could you tell me how that would work like how to do that?

I don't remember entirely for specific distros, but when you first boot up, you'll get that screen where it gives you a greeting and you can hit enter or another key to do a certain type of installation. At that point, you should be able to type in the kernel you want to boot off of and an argument presented to it.

To get an exact one would require us to take a look at FC in particular. From what I've looked at (a screenshot on this site http://www.informit.com/articles/article.asp?p=355337&seqNum=3) you can hit F2 and other assorted keys and get options on types of boot arguments which is exactly what we're looking for which will hopefully help. Look for something maybe about video drivers and other arguments which may help you out.

Oh, there are a few also listed on the website. I'd try two in particular that I saw:

1. linux nofb
This will start a no framebuffer installation (having to do with the video card)
2. linux mediacheck
This will check the boot media for any problems.

but why would fedora core 3 work and not 4? It detects my video drive and monitor before the gui install freezes

I'm not exactly sure why this would be the case, unless there was some drastic change in the code they use. I'm essentially just trying to give you any ideas to try out and see if it helps.

As one last idea for you, is it possible to use apt or yum (whichever FC uses, I forget now) and update all the systems packages with that instead of installing new? That may be a way to do it.

Ya i did that already before posting..its yum and well it boots into what i call the white screen of death. Can anyone recommend a bleeding edge distro? that used gnome?

If you want, you could try out Arch Linux. It's a fairly tough distro to get the hang of, though, so maybe you'd like to try something more like Ubuntu? I've only heard good things.

but why would fedora core 3 work and not 4?

Fedora is kind of the opposite of debian.

Debian calls their distro unstable for years when 99% of it is stable.

Fedora call their distro stable after a year and 99% of it is still testing.

Fedora has a lot of testing packages and new packages to make it cutting edge so Redhat can test stuff. On the downside you make get so module or package problems you dont get on a more stable OS. I had FC4 installed with no problems. Try FC3 or another distro like ubuntu, debian or slackware. Something that is more stable and geared toward working, not testing.
