You will need to run a defrag on the ME partition to allow the files/folders to be moved to the beginning of the partition. Give that a try and see if it helps.

What are you using to partition? I know for a fact that Partition Magic is great for any of this.

What partitioning tools does Mandrake include? Can you choose from which one to use. Try doing a 'Expert Mode' install as it show give you greater control over the install process and hopefully allow you to partition your drive correctly.
Now where's all the Mandrake users on this site that are always raving about how great Mandrake is.

i bought these cds at linux central, id read mandrake would pretty much install itself. the cdroms have no manuals so i read some general lnstallation notes off the net. ill try the expert mode, by the way, im using the included partition utility. I need an alternative to windows so i will not give up.
Thanx for all yr help.
Mandrake uses DiskDrake as its disk utility, although I'm not sure that it can non-destructively resize a Win partition. Partition Magic, fips (http://www.igd.fhg.de/~aschaefe/fips/), and Ranish Partition Manager (http://www.ranish.com/) will all do the trick. PM will cost you, but fips and Ranish are free downloads.
There is another issue concerning resizing Win98 partitions which may apply to ME as well: 3. Data at end of hard drive after defrag
-----------------------------------------
a) Windows swapfile isn't moved by defrag. You must uninstall it using the
386enhanced part of the Control Panel and reinstall it after using FIPS.
b) The progs IMAGE and MIRROR, store hidden files in the last sector of the
disk. These files are image.idx and mirorsav.fil. Delete them before using
FIPS (they'll be recreated next time you run mirror). In the root directory:
attrib -r -s -h image.idx
attrib -r -s -h mirorsav.fil
del \image.idx
del mirorsav.fil
c) Search for hidden files.
d) DO NOT MOVE DOS HIDDEN FILES ibmbio.com, ibmdos.com or something similar.
These reside in the first sectors of the disk anyhow.
