No there is not. Your system will explode in 16 minutes from.. now..
If you have turned caps-lock on, make sure your password is lower case :)

when you go to boot, at your boot manager (if you use one), type: linux single
you should be able to log in and change your root password, if it works with your distro
Another good way to look around after a suspected 'root' is to use one of the pre-made root/boot disks like tomsrtbt or your distro's install disk; the point is to get to a shell and mount the HDD read-only (or read-write to change the password, change other things) so you can examine what's been changed and also look for evidence of a break-in. At that point you can choose to either backup important files and reinstall or try to repair the damage done and plug the holes. Luck!

Thanks for the advice guys I have got my system back now. A "friend" of mine was proving that my box needed a security update and managed to gain access. I have since changed the password and some of security policies.

And reported him to the authorities, I hope. Seriously, that kind of thing is not very funny.

tell me about it. I was seriously concerned for a while. needless to say I have improved security on my system quite seriously over the last few hours. I really thought for a while that I was going to have to re-install. Its not worth reporting him. He only did it to prove a point and If I'd checked my email before I posted here then I wouldn't have panicked.

That's a good way to make a point, but you're right...he's a a**hole!
