In KDE, you can edit all of the toolbars adding and subtracting buttons. Is this possible with GNOME applications? The only application I can find that allows this is Firefox and it is still very limited (you can't have many of the items that are in the menubar as buttons).

in some apps i think you can but not many. in gnome some apps have detatchable menu bars. the gnome hig (human interface guidelines) are pretty specific (and minimal) about what types of buttons you can / can't have on a toolbar so i think it is by design that you don't have a lot of control.
