I would like to knoww how I could set up network printing in linux where the printer has its own IP address and the other computers on the network can print to it using the ehternet connection. I know how to do it in windows via creating a TCP/IP port and doing it that way, but how would I go about doing this in linux?

through cups.

in general, you connect to the local (http://localhost:631) cups daemon in your browser and follow the wizard-like interface to add a printer... enter ip address, printer model, etc.

btw, there are tons of howtos and previous threads on justlinux.com with regards to how to get cups working as well as many howtos on the Internet if you require more detail.

PS: your avatar/icon is very funny.

So it sounds like your printer is connected to (print server) a Linux P.C. Are the other computers (clients) on the network Windows PCs or Linux PCs? I ask as the clients have to be setup as well.

I have only done this with LPR on the print server and for Linux and Win2000 clients.

its not connected to a print server. The machine has its own IP address that's programmed directly into the machine. and on the windows machines, I just add a local printer and create a TCP/IP port with the machine's IP address and away it goes...

use cups like i stated earlier

also if you don't want to use the daemon, you can probably use the client config file in cups to just point it directly to the ip.

Thanks hayl, I was just clarifying for the other guy who posted... yeah I looked through the CUPS stuff and it looks like it will do what I need it to.

besides, I knew you wanted to look at my avatar some more.....
