I am getting the following error when I try to install nvidia-glx via apt-get.

dpkg-divert: `diversion of /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libGLcore.a to /usr/X11R6/lib/nvidia/libGLcore.a.xlibmesa by nvidia-glx' clashes with `diversion of /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libGLcore.a to /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libGLcore.a.debian-xfree86 by xserver-xfree86-4.4.0'
dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/nvidia-glx_1.0.7174-3_i386.deb (--unpack):
subprocess pre-installation script returned error exit status 2
Errors were encountered while processing:
/var/cache/apt/archives/nvidia-glx_1.0.7174-3_i386.deb

I was able to successfully install nvidia-kernel-2.6.7 and nvidia-kernel-common with apt-get, but it failes when I attempt nvidia-glx. I am running Debian Sarge with a 2.6.7 kernel and my vid card is a 3D Prophet II GTS 64mb Geforce 2. Any help is much appreciated!

u have mesa installed?
i have a feeling nvidia's stuff messes with mesa's software opengl thing...
from what i know, u don't need mesa for opengl to work if u have a nvidia card

You dont need mesa in order for it to work mesa just emulates opengl via software. Ive never installed the drivers in debian but ive always had great success using the NVIDIA installer on nvidias website. maybe you should try that. Make sure you are in run level 3. Actually that might be your problem with aptget. anyways if you get installed be sure to read the docs you have to change somthing in your x.org or xf86 config file.

I think I installed mesa for my old video card. It is an onboard savage 3d card or something like that. I don't remember what all I installed though. Does anyone know what I need to remove in order to get this working?

It looks like I have xlibmesa-dri, xlibmesa-gl, xlibmesa-gl-dev, xlibmesa-glu, xlibmesa-glu-dev installed. When I select to remove them, it wants to remove tons of other crap like x-window-system, a bunch of kde apps, and games. If there are any of these that I can avoid removing that would be great.

I'm pretty sure it shouldnt matter. I think the nvidia drivers will just replace the mesa ones. in any case mesa shouldn't prevent you from actually installing the nvidia drivers.

Well, I tried removing all the mesa stuff and reinstalling nvidia-glx, but it still didn't work. I also tried the Nvidia installer, but that didn't get very far at all. It was complaining about not finding the source files, even failed when I gave it the --kernel-source-path=/usr/src/kernel-source-2.6.7

Anything else to try would be much appreciated.

Any help? I've searched and searched, but haven't found much. I will continue to try the installer, but I don't think that is the problem.

i know this is digging up a kinda old thread but i had your exact same problem and this thread helped me...maybe you should try it. i'm really not sure how it works something about using gcc3 to compile one and gcc4 on the other...i dunno. i know i didnt change my version of gcc but it worked anyways...i had to reboot after i did theses steps inorder for it to work though.

anyways
