Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : Problems with Opera
Ok, i'm running Opera 5.0b7 and i've been having some interesting problems lately. First of all, i lost the ability to use the back button while in the forums. i have no idea why it's doing this. I tried to uninstall it using rpm -e opera and it said that i didn't have it installed. so i tried doing rpm -uvh opera and it said i already had that version installed?!?! however, when i run opera from the console in root mode, it works fine. not sure what happened but need an answer if you can. also, yes, i was in root mode when i tried the rpm commands.

I have had problems with the Opera beta too. Unfortunetly not the same as you.
The installation went perfect, but I have a few random crashes. And sometimes keybord input to the program disapears.
But I think they just released BETA 8. Have not had time to install it tough.

hey Sim, I know this might sound pretty stupid, don't take it that way...
Are you sure the pages aren't opening in new windows?? That would make the back button not work.

Yeah, I've had problems with opera too. The
problem I have is with in a lot of pages some of text overlaps other text and that looks bad. I think I give up on Opera. The latest mozillas have been much faster. Have to keep an eye on that.
can anybody give me advice on how to uninstall it? that's the biggest problem right now, i can't even uninstall it and try to reinstall???

Edit: yeah, i'm sure that they're not opening in new windows... no offense taken
also, the thing i like the most about opera is the ability to have many windows open at the same time... can mozilla do that? i haven't looked into it.

opera is the only browser I know of that has the multiwindow capability without spawning a new window...well you know what I mean...Mozilla is just like Netscape in that it spawns an entire new navigator to view a page.

Its true that beta 8 is available for download. So why not install it. From my experience upgrading from beta 6 to beta 7, your beta 8 should overwrite beta 7. Maybe you should give this a try.

If rpm-e does not work, have you tried to uninstall it with a pacge manager, as i dont know what distro you are using i cant suggest one.
If nothing works you will have to manually uninstall it. run "slocate -u" then run "locate opera" (without the quotes). This will show you where all the opera files are, then you can manually delete them.
Cheers
LiNuts.
BTW I'm using opera 0b8, and it seems O.K.
I'm using redhat 7.0. I'm not familiar with a package manager, i do mostly programming on my linux deck so i haven't done much program install/uninstalling. Thx for the help people!

It's definitely worth upgrading Opera to Beta 8. Beta 7 crashed a couple times a day for me, but Beta 8 has not crashed since I downloaded it (the day it was released).
alright... here are the steps i took:
1. i tried uninstalling using rpm -e ... nothing worked
2. i tried uninstalling using the redhat package manager... it uninstalled, but when i reinstalled, the same problems existed.
3. i changed to root and ran "slocate -u" (not sure what that does) and then ran "locate opera"
4. wildly using rm -rf i got rid of all opera files i could find.
5. this is the weird part. to double check i had gotten rid of everything, i typed "opera" at the prompt... interestingly it started up and gave me the initial agreement box which meant it thought it was running for the first time.
6. it started and said it couldn't open the bookmark file... turns out this file wasn't there... i created the file and have had no problems since.
I'm not really sure why this ended up working, and if anybody has some insight into this feel free to post it. other than that thanks for the people who did give suggestions!
