My "friend" convinced me to try Linux Slackware and said he could walk me through it. I have 2 20GB HDs and had XP on it. First he tells me to format both drives. Then he says I need to make 1 partition for both disks. He also said its important I install Windows BEFORE I install Linux. Then he cant tell me what to do so I'm sitting here with a ****ing useless PC. I figured if I had 2 HD's this wouldn't be too difficult. I got the install iso burned and have partition magic 5. If anyone can help I'll send you a money order for 100 bucks. Alls I want is to have Linux on one drive and XP on another. *pulls hair out*

Forget the money. This is strickly a volunteer only site.

If you want XP and Linux on separate drives, then first reinstall XP on the first drive.

Next use Partition Magic and create whatever Linux and swap partitions you want.

Put in your Linux install cd, reboot and enter the bios to change the boot order to cdrom first and then just follow the install. It's usually best to select 'Expert Mode' install.

Post back when you run into any problems installing Linux.

...also, if you are COMPLETELY new to Linux, Slackware may not be the way to go. (I know I'm going to take flak for this - but I'm speaking from experience.) I started on Slackware, and it was damn discouraging - even with the help I received from this site. Suse, Mandrake, RedHat, they all are more "newbie friendly." But, I'm just letting you know what you're in for so you don't get so discouraged that you dump Linux completely.

You can either install the Linux bootloader into the mbr of the first (XP) drive which will allow you to boot either XP or Linux, or install the Linux bootloader into the Linux boot/root partition on the second drive and setup the XP boot.ini to boot either XP or Linux.

There are other posts here at LNO you can read (and search) to learn about bootloaders.

Dualboot Linux and Win2000 (http://www.littlewhitedog.com/reviews_other_00011.asp) which will work the same for XP.

Lilo bootloader and dualboot (http://www.troubleshooters.com/linux/lilo.htm)

I guess it's safe to suggest installing lilo in the MBR now that Craig isn't around anymore

I wnet to http://www.littlewhitedog.com/reviews_other_00011.asp
and got to the point where I need to modify the boot.ini file. There is no boot.ini file in XP. What now?

The boot.ini is there, it's just hidden. Go into My Computer -> Tools -> Folder Options -> View. Select 'Show hidden files and folders'. Un-check 'Hide protected operating system files'.

Oh, yea. If you want to send me some monies, I'd be happy to accept. j/k :D ;)
