When running apt-get update I got errors about the lists not downloading properly and ended up having to run it twice each time I wanted to update so I decided to remove all record of the lists and apt-get update again to renew the lists. So rm -rf * 'ed /var/lib/apt/'s contents and then ran apt-get update again, but I get this printed a number of times down the screen:

E: Tried to dequeue a fetching object

I ran apt-get autoclean and tried the update option of dselect but it still gives the error! Have I broken apt for good?

No one's heard of this problem :(  guess I have to reinstall and spend hours reupdating, for future reference, how would I clear all my apt lists so that apt-get update regets all the lists again?
Thanks
