Hi, I was wondering, what is the most common/popular/efficient mp3 player that can be freely downloaded for linux? I'd like to have something other than Kaffeine for my mp3 files.

I'd like to have something other than Kaffeine for my mp3 files. TheCatMan 04-19-2005, 06:00 PM I'm still a big xmms (http://www.xmms.org) fan, and use mpg123 (http://www.mpg123.de) on the command line - it tends to be more robust than xmms when faced with awkward (broken?) mp3s. I've also seen Amarok (http://amarok.kde.org) recommended a fair bit lately, but not tried it. psych-major 04-19-2005, 06:45 PM Ditto on xmms and mpg123. They are both included with my distro (Slack) and both are able to work with Winamp EQF and playlist files. Amarok is OK, but I wouldn't choose it over these other two. If you use mpg123, here are the command line options I use: mpg123 -vCyb1024 filename.mp3 or mpg123 -vCyb1024 -@playlist.m3u -v verbose -C enables command keys, s for pause, f for finish, q for quit -y tells it to resync on error -b1024 tells it to buffer 1 meg -@ specifies a playlist file to use. It can also work with online streaming mp3 content if you put the url in a text file and save it with a .m3u extension. JayMan8081 04-19-2005, 07:21 PM I'm gonna throw my 2 cents in and say go with xmms as well. I use the gxmms applet in gnome as well so I can have the controls on the taskbar. Works quite nicely for easy access to stop or pause when the boss comes in. :p psi42 04-19-2005, 08:11 PM XMMS. There are a few ncurses frontends (search on freshmeat), so you can control it from a terminal... plattypus1 04-19-2005, 10:39 PM XMMS is the most popular, and in my experience, the best MP3 player for Linux. If you want command-line control, I recommend xmmsctrl, a small command-line app that controls XMMS. Basically, you just do "xmmsctrl <command>" and xmms does what you say, ie "xmmsctrl next" goes to the next song. Also nifty for shell scripts, or creating menus that can control XMMS at a quick click. serz 04-19-2005, 11:50 PM xmms and mpg123! GmarAppledude 04-23-2005, 06:40 PM I like XMMS and use it often but coming from Winamp I miss the Web radio button, is there an app which can access the massive list of station Winamp provides? Its a good way to hear Goa Psy Trance for a few hours. frimann 04-23-2005, 07:08 PM amarok can do that:p Gogeta_44 04-23-2005, 10:45 PM XMMS and mpg321. I use gkrellm, firefox-foxytunes, and gxmms to control xmms so I can be really lazy and keep it in another workstation. rocketpcguy 04-23-2005, 11:15 PM beep-media-player is like XMMS with gtk2 dysharmonic 04-25-2005, 12:44 PM XMMS and it's smaller 'launcher' prog, wmxmms. But still if there's an app to more enhance the sounds of xmms...? serz 04-25-2005, 12:54 PM Originally posted by rocketpcguy beep-media-player is like XMMS with gtk2 Yeah, it's nice, it looks way better. :) deathadder 04-25-2005, 02:55 PM I'm going to have to go with XMMS, I used beep-media-player for a while but it was a beta and crashed on me too often, i cant stand not having music playing :D rocketpcguy 04-25-2005, 04:48 PM But still if there's an app to more enhance the sounds of xmms...? yes, there is a plugin that does this. it was called crystal or something... justlinux.com
