Let me first off say that the system I'm running right now is a 750mhz speed.
I've figured it was time up upgrade my slow system to something and have amassed about 350-400 dollars for the upgrade and already have a new power supply, but I'm having trouble finding components that will work with linux.
Could someone recomend some parts, prosessors, motherboards, soundcards, video, etc that are compatible with most linux distros. I'm thinking i'm going to be using debian on my new machine.
I already looked at the debian site for compatible parts but I don't know much about hardware so I'm pretty lost. My main deal is software.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm looking for someting bigerthan or equal to 3.0ghz. Intel Amd doesnt' matter.

you won't get anywhere near your goal with $400, but:
go amd...try that athlonXP Barton
nvidia graphics card....nothing else will do.
try to get a 400 FSB motherboard. I like Asus, but don't get too exotic here.
soundcard? anything will work...the nforce boards are okay and they usually have nvaudio integrated sound.

$400? That's plenty! I just built a comp for a friend for $500, and that's with a $200 monitor! Post some ideas for components you are planning on using, and we will throw you some feedback.

I guess I forgot to mention I already have my hard drives, cdrom, and monitor. So far I was looking at a celeron 2.93(I think)ghz chip.

I you can do it, by all means think about the AMD Sempron line. I've use two with no problems. Great processors for the money. AMD Sempron 2800+ is what I use. They have a clock speed of 2Ghz with a FSB of 333 and can handle anything I throw at them. I've install and ues several distros with them. Check them out.

Unfortunatly I'm looking for 3ghz LOWEST. What kind of memory do I need? Theres like a billion different choices ddr ddr2 3200 etc. How do I figure which my motherboard would handle?

pick the procesor, then the motherboard, then read the specs to find out which memory it takes, then cry because you don't have enough $$ to support a 3GHz purchase.
Get an athlon-xp barton.
Good Luck

You can find an Athlon 2500+ Barton for cheap nowadays. You will be very glad you did. Mhz and Ghz dont mean as much as they used to anymore. I dont know how to explain efficiency vs brawn but that should explain it all right there. Its about ACTUAL performance. You will get a LOT more out of a 2ghz Athlon than you EVER will out of a 3ghz Celeron. Dont get so hung up on those numbers, they really mean very little nowadays. Get the Barton and you will be happy.
Any Athlon 2000+ or newer will blow the crap out of any Celeron at any rating.
