This is a bit of a ramble, mostly my (cheap) opinion, so just skip it if you are in a hurry.

If you are in the mood for a little food for thought, then read on.

I have tried quite a few distros in my short Linux life. I find all have their relative pros and cons. It is my position that anyone using Linux in a critical application (not unlike software development as a whole) should be well versed in their field before proceeding. Newbies and home use are all part of the learning experience. When profit and / or human life are on the line, that's different, that's the professional's realm. Any professional must be well versed in his / her field, and can not depend on flashy distros to do all the work for them.

Bottom line is, these Linux distributors seek to generate a "Windowsey" Linux, but never forget Linux's true virtue, that is that the source is available for all, don't look towards a distro to answer your questions for you, knowledge will set you free.

Okay end of ramble, should you need a shovel for all this BS, just let me know

Take care, I fight the linux battle every day!!!
