Well I was having network issues, still am. I upgraded my router firmware to the newest stabled version released by linksys.

I typed in http://ip to access my webserver forgetting the port. This usualy gives me a connection refused. This time it gave me my router access prompt. If I do supply the port it gives me the development machine as expected.

I checked the routers settings and sure enough remote access was disabled.

I think this is because I have block anonymous request to enabled, which would instead of giving conection refused it would issue a operation timed out. Except for a local machine.

What I'm asking is ...is this normal. I don't want just anyone being able to access my router remotley.

From my experience with Linksys routers, they differentiate between incoming connections on the Internet side and the internal network side.

You usually cannot access the router's configuration from the Internet (far too dangerous, even with a password...) but you can from the internal network.

So what you are actually disabling is something to do with connections from the Internet and not your internal network which is usually quite open on the router.

Yes, this is normal, but if you REALLY want to test your router, try to use a public proxy and access back into the router. Even better is use an SSH account on someone else's machine to attempt to open up access back into the router. It should deny it flatly.
