anybody have any thoughys on winlinux as afirst step to using a linux os ?

It's what I started on, but I think you'll find, as I did, that it quickly becomes insufficient. It might be okay just to take a peek at linux, but it's not a very accurate picture of what you'll encounter entering the linux world. You might be better off just skipping that step and trying out something like Mandrake 8.0 (One of the easiest to start with) or Redhat, Slack, Debian, etc.

I've never used Winlinux. You could check out Peanut Linux, www.peanutlinux.org (http://www.peanutlinux.org) . I've set it up at work on my 2nd PC on a 1 gig DOS partition. Actually really easy to setup for DOS.
Version 8.4 is 80megs+ a 5 meg ZIP file.
Version 8.3 is 50megs+ a 5 meg ZIP file.
The Zip file has FIPS, a repartitioning tool.
