how do you change the resolution in slackware without reconfiging the x?

If you have "640x480" "800x600" "1024x768" or something similar in your XF86Config you can cycle through these with ctrl and + or -. You can also reorder the above resolutions just by putting the required one first ie:
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
to startx with the 1024x768. Make sure you change the line that is relevant to your defaultDepth.
