Thanks nerrollus 02-04-2002, 02:58 AM Hmm.. Because the people that use it are called Slackers.. ;p indelusion 02-04-2002, 03:04 AM I think Slack is cool because it has dark and mysterious vibe. Mandrake has a goofy vibe. Redhat has a microsoft vibe and debian has a superior dork vibe. scanez 02-04-2002, 03:08 AM Originally posted by indelusion: debian has a superior dork vibe. w00t!!!!!!! It forces you to understand your system in ways that you really didn't want to know about. (recently I was helping a friend with RH and I had a problem with rpm's - found it easier to compile from source) -little to no bloatware, you choose (as in most distros) what you want to install, but Slack does little up front in the basic, out of the box install. -mystique -old quote(ish) "If you are having problems with linux, RTFM, and if that doesn't help, ask a Slackware user". -it's better on toast :D and, had to do it you damn Debs  SLACKWARE  <edit>spelling [ 04 February 2002: Message edited by: berb ] mcmanus69 02-04-2002, 04:43 AM WHy does everyone bash bloatware so much? In my opinion, if u have plenty of HD space, what's a few extra programs on ur HD gonna do, that is, if they're not being run at boot-time or anything? I mean, how many of us actually know what every single freakin' proggy does, or how it fares to another one? I like having options (say one popular ftp proggy has a weird bug, and another less-popular one doesn't, etc...). My point is, as long as u have HD space, and it's NOT being run w/out ur knowledge (leaving security holes and memory leaks, etc.), then it's not really that bad. Of course that argument goes out the window for older computers and laptops, where HD space is limited (ESPECIALLY old laptops!), but most of the time that's not THAT big of an issue, IMO. I just see it as having more options, is all. And isn't Linux all about having options??? TeRG 02-04-2002, 10:19 AM /me thinks this should be moved to rants /me gets out his flame suit  SLACKWARE  PimpHolic 02-04-2002, 04:45 PM slackware is just that damn good. period. :D :D :D recluse. 02-04-2002, 05:08 PM I can't for teh life of me figure out why optech has responded to this post already? He must be really busy. OK hotshots, if slackware forces you to understand your system on a god like level whre do you obtain all this knowledge? /me waits to be raised to god-like status EscapeCharacter 02-04-2002, 05:13 PM Slack is the best because it is the most bsd like distro, the rest are sys v and sys v sucks Strike 02-04-2002, 05:39 PM /me notes that there is not a thing that Slackware does that Debian cannot do (or at least the equivalent of), yet there are several things that Debian does that Slackware cannot without using Debian-specific things. X_console 02-04-2002, 10:51 PM I'm surprised Strike is the only one who said something about that Debian remark. :) Craig (if he were here) would have an essay written out on why you shouldn't use Slackware. :) Alex Cavnar, aka alc6379 02-05-2002, 12:17 PM I'd personally have to agree with the SysV thing. I know how to use SysV, but Slack is more like BSD, which is cool, because I Slack, and it make it easier for me to learn FreeBSD. scanez 02-05-2002, 12:26 PM Originally posted by X_console: I'm surprised Strike is the only one who said something about that Debian remark. :) Craig (if he were here) would have an essay written out on why you shouldn't use Slackware. :) I mentioned Debian :) IMHO, Sys V > BSD...and this is why we need Craig back, if nothing else for his...well, can't really think of a reason...
