This is perhaps not an urgent issue, but I was quite surprised that the simple 'beep' program doesn't work for me. I get no errors and no output - audible or otherwise. I have tried it as root, as a normal user, on a tty console, and in an xterm, yet I get no beeps.

I know I must have a PC speaker because the PC beeps at least twice when it boots (for the POST).

Am I just being silly?

I'm on Gentoo Linux, by the way.

What is this "simple 'beep' program"?

hmm... the only thing that comes to mind is to try running this program first.

xset b on

No luck. I have just realised that my kernel doesn't have the PC speaker input module enabled... that must be it. Thanks anyway.
