Release date is scheduled for April 6th. The new release is 5.04, not 5.10 - release names are based on year.month - 5.04 is thus April 2005. 5.10 will be released in October. Apart from that, from what I've seen they've made a lot of bug fixes and improvements - one of the most useful that I've seen is the new update-installer, which is a tray applet that does an apt-get update and checks for updates to the system, and then interacts with Synaptic for installation. Not a big thing, but a nice touch. DRock 04-01-2005, 06:22 PM Also Gnome went to Bleeding edge. From the live preview cd, it's not too bad so far, sound failed to start though, so i can't wait for the actual release and try that out. CoffeeMan 04-01-2005, 06:38 PM I am really impressed with the new Ubuntu! My dad is a Linux convert because of it. I like what they have done with Gnome. I commend the Gnome and the Debian developers for making this distribution. ions 04-03-2005, 01:28 PM I've been running Hoary for a few weeks now. Other than a couple bugs which have actually been resolved now it's been rock solid. They were really doing a lot of work the last week as there were over 70 updates daily. Like Mr Ben said there were a lot of bug fixes over Warty, as Warty was a little warty. 3 more days and Hoary is officially released stable. :) DRock 04-03-2005, 08:23 PM Originally posted by ions I've been running Hoary for a few weeks now. (not the candidate version) ions 04-06-2005, 06:17 PM April 8th. I thought for sure it was today(6th) but apparently not. http://www.ubuntulinux.org/wiki/HoaryReleaseSchedule DRock 04-06-2005, 09:32 PM Originally posted by ions April 8th. I have the 8th off, guess i know what I can do :) ions 04-06-2005, 09:37 PM This close to the official release is still very stable so if you have time before then don't feel you have to wait for the software. The daily updates are painless. :) Hmse 04-06-2005, 10:04 PM So far I'm very impressed. Just ordered 12 cd's last night. It installed almost flawless on my First Generation iMac; only one or two errors which were easily fixed, and I believe they wee bugs in the ppc packages 'cause it happened with both Warty and Hoary. teeitup 04-07-2005, 03:15 AM Well I just got a new Dell 6000d laptop. I decided to try the latest Hoary release. (as of Sunday morning) It installed flawlessly. 1: It installed the ATI radieon mobility driver at the correct 1680x1050 resolution. 2: setup both network connections, Installed the Intel Pro/wireless drivers. (I'm using the wireless connection to write this) 3: I have a USB wireless mouse that it also setup perfectly. I'm very impressed. The lack of applications in it's repositories is a drawback. It'll get better with time. ions 04-07-2005, 03:02 PM While there aren't as many apps in the repos as some other distros what's missing is really only the more obscure apps. I'm certainly never losing out on productivity due to not being able to find a package I need. SpookyFox 04-07-2005, 06:21 PM I've been more happy with Ubuntu than I ever have with any other distro that I've tried. Everything worked fantastically out of the box. Er...LiveCD, whatever. I've been running Hoary for about 3 weeks now. I've been getting updates EVERY day, but that makes me happy in knowing that they're still supporting things and not going to ditch it after the release. Even my sound! I downloaded the fglrx drivers for my Radeon and installed those and everything was peachy! 'Course, I had to make the appropriate changes in the xorg.conf, but after that, it was golden. Quake 3 runs faster under Linux than it does in Windows! Overall, I've been incredibly impressed with the ease of the package handling and the synaptic tool. Great stuff and I hope they keep up the good work! ions 04-08-2005, 01:59 AM Ahhhh I thought it was the 6th it was supposed to be released. It was delayed until the 8th to accomodate Gnome 2.10.1. Source: http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=24081&page=1&pp=10 They did change the site and forums up though. Looks good but I don't have an aversion to brown that others do... justlinux.com
