Hey...
I'm in Software Engineering at University, and I need to do a big project next year. I think I want to do some work on linux, but I need some ideas!
All ideas are welcome!!!!!!!!
Thanks.

What sort of work are you looking for? Does this have to be a completely independent project, or can you join an already established team? What programming do you like doing (graphics, hardware, etc)?
There are hundreds (if not thousands) of Linux software projects currently being worked on. You can write some drivers for the kernel, or try to optimize bottlenecks in KDE, or if you're feeling really *****ious you can write a new virtual memory system ;).
There are plenty of options, it really depends on just what you're looking for.

Probably writing drivers and other Kernel or optimizing bottlenecks, as you suggested. Stuff like that is appropriate for a 4th year project moreso than say joining open source project for some application. I also thought it'd be cool to do some work to make linux look better (or make it easier to make it look better). I've also thought about a sort of PHP compiler project, so that people who write PHP scripts for others can't get ripped off so easily. But I guess that sort of would break the whole idea of the PHP apache module.......................
