What's wrong with using XFree86? Strogian 02-03-2002, 11:26 AM There probably is.. But X is pretty much what EVERYONE uses. So, why would you want to use anything else? As TacKat said, there probably isn't anything else that is as good as XFree86. (you do know that you can choose different window managers/desktop environments under X, right?) demian 02-03-2002, 01:40 PM Originally posted by sheek: is there anything else that does the same job of xfree86 ? and will it run under linux Yes and yes. There are quite a few windowing systems actually. Berlin (http://www.berlin-consortium.org/) might be the most prominent X alternative, along with dinX (http://dinx.sourceforge.net/). As I said there are many more, some of which seem being stuck in pre-beta phase (if even) but with the rise of embedded linux some promising projects were started like pico-gui (http://pgui.sourceforge.net/). The later projects are meant to run mostly on PDAs but most of them do work on the desktop as well. There is no X replacement, however, that comes close to the supported features of XFree86. StarMoose 02-03-2002, 02:11 PM Aren't there a couple of versions of X other than xfree86? I doubt any of them are comperable though. TacKat 02-03-2002, 02:36 PM StarMoose... Haven't I seen that name somewhere before? AHL maybe? Speedy 02-03-2002, 05:03 PM Well there's Accelerated X but it is non-free as in speech and beer. 40-100$US per license depending on what version you want. It used to have more features/support than XFree86 but with Xfree86 4.1.0 or so I think XFree86 has surpassed it. There was another commercial xserver I think but I don't remember its name right now. Accelerated X can be found at www.xig.com (http://www.xig.com) but no guarantees as I never tried it. -Speedy edit: I can't speel very gud.
