I started X and now i don't have a window manager. I need gnome back. How do i get gnome to work with the new X? sarah31 02-03-2002, 06:26 AM Could you clarify a bit? So when you startx nothing happen or you just don't have Gnome? Are you stuck in console mode (comandline)? Just a few more details will help us out. trueNewbie 02-03-2002, 07:19 AM I have xdm. It's horrible. I need gnome back. sarah31 02-03-2002, 07:47 AM Okay I understand now. I think what you have to do is start gdm and "turn off"xdm. Unfortunately I don't know how to do that myself. Perhaps a search through the forum archicves will provide an answer for you. Sorry I can't help you out more with this :( sarah31 02-03-2002, 07:53 AM you can take a look at this link it might help you! http://www.gnome.org/faqs/users-faq/starting.html TacKat 02-03-2002, 11:59 AM You need to have the line "exec gnome-session" in your ~/.xinitrc file. trueNewbie 02-03-2002, 03:21 PM Ok i did what it said on the gnome help page and now xdm still starts up, but if i crash it, X will resume with gnome. How do i fix this so that gnome starts. BTW it does say "exec gnome-session" in that file. Basically i need to stop xdm from ever starting up. Choozo 02-03-2002, 03:30 PM Have a peek into /etc/inittab and look at the last line (last line here anyway) which says something like: "x:5:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon" Then work your way through /etc/X11/prefdm (as in my case above), and see where you can define your preferred window manager. Cheers :) trueNewbie 02-03-2002, 03:43 PM I finally fixed it. This is how i did it. aparently the same script that logs me in was starting x with out my window sessions. There was a file in /etc/sysconfig/ called "autologin". I deleted it and the world was a happy place. There is also another script running x somewhere else that automatically started x with gnome once i deleted that file. Now if i can remember how i installed the true-type fonts again so i can get this screen looking pretty again I"ll be a happy camper. mdwatts 02-03-2002, 05:51 PM I posted this (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=026196) in the forum yesterday on installing TT fonts. Should help you just in case you can't remember. sarah31 02-04-2002, 05:00 AM Im very happy that you got everythign opporational again. I have to admit I was pleased with the calmness you displayed. Most people would have been blazing mad or worse. I also must admit that I was very amused with your first response to my initial post. xdm is truely horrible when you first are confronted with it :) I imagine that it was quite the refief to get a nice gui back on screen. justlinux.com
