I just installed (not really I guess...) kernel version 2.4.17. When I enter my new LILO label at the LILO prompt the system starts to boot (the 'dot' progress meter starts to increase) and then it just reboots.

Any starting points or advice would be much appreciated.

Some Info:
Debian Potato (2.2r2 ?) with a today version of dist-upgrade.
Current kernel: 2.2.17
Anything else??

TIA for any ideas.

The 2.4 series kernel will not inherently work with 'Potato' - you've got to either upgrade to 'Woody' or workaround with specific versions of packages people have made up just for this sort of thing. You can find all the packages you need at the link below.

I have followed those instructions (before I posted the first time even) and then recompiled the kernel. All went well, but the same thing happens right after telling it to load the new kernel. Is there something I am missing? Any ideas on the reboot thing?

Thanks.

Ooops!. I had the kernel compiled with Athlon support instead of K6-2. That'll do it...

Now onto iptables...
