First of all, can I (and if yes, where?) download a .deb of the latest stable version?
The reason why I am not willing to compile it, is because I once did. It took ages, and I don't know ½ of my hardware. Anyway, I was sorta happy after it was done. Then I noticed I still had the old kernel, so I rebooted. But no, it didn't helped. Still the old kernel.
So now, I'm not going to spend all that time on it, and I simply want a debian binary.

I was also wondering, does the latest version of the kernel support windows NTFS partitions? It supported my FAT ut not my NTFS, which kinda sucks :( :( :(

If not, are they planning to let the kernel support mounting such a partitions?

edit: Just found out the latest kernel does support NTFS partitions, so now only remaining: where can I get a debian binary of the latest (stable) kernel?

When I do 'apt-get install kernel' it tells me it didn't found the package kernel :(

Depending on whether you run potato or woody/sid you'll get 2.2.19 or 2.4.17 respectively. Just do apt-cache search kernel-image to see what's available and then apt-get install kernel-image-2.4.17 for instance.

If you do run potato and want the latest 2.4.17 kernel have a look at Adrian Bunk's backport packages: http://www.fs.tum.de/~bunk/kernel-24.html

However, Adrian recently resigned as a debian developer and orphaned his packages so don't expect these packages to be updated any time soon (noone adopted them so far).

so i installed 2.4.17, and then reinstalled lilo by running
/sbin/lilo
which gave as output:
{root@localhost@/home/ludo} /sbin/lilo
Added Linux *
Skipping /boot/vmlinuz.old
Added windows
{root@localhost@/home/ludo}

So now, can I safely reboot and is my lilo configured etc like it should?

Dunno. What does your /etc/lilo.conf look like? Does it have an entry for the old (working kernel). I'd double check that before rebooting. I never actually did a kernel upgrade with apt.

Check /boot and /lib/modules to make sure the old kernel is still there. If so I'd say it's safe to reboot.

That doesnt seem right to me; if you installed the new kernel, it would move the old kernel to vmlinuz.old and therefore your LILO output would not have skipped over it. I can't remember the last time I installed a pre-packaged kernel, but doesn't 'apt-get install kernel-image' just download and then put the kernel-image .deb under /usr/src/ just like as if you had built one? You still have to go and 'dpkg -i /usr/src/kernel-image-$VERSION.deb', no??

I rebooted, everything worked fine for booting.
When I type 'kernelversion' the output is '2.4'.
How can I get to see the exact version?
The problem is that I still can't accesss my windwos (/dev/hda1) 'mount: fs type NTFS not supported' is what it says.
We're having a huge problem here, my dad can't boot into his windows anymore, reinstall etc isn't working, because lilo broke his windows&linux partition. He reformatted his linux partition, and reinstalled it, which now works fine. Formatting the windows partition is NOT an option, since it's full of important data. 'Upgrading' from win2k to win2k isn't working neither. What i want to do: try to access my windows partition, and if that works put his hd in my computer, and then backup his windows stuff. But for that, it needs to support NTFS type. FAT is supported, that always worked fine, but NTFS never worked.
Conclusion:
- how can I see the exact kernelversion
- it's possible that I downloaded a kernel for AMD, while I have intel celeron. anybody knows the exact kernelname I can apt-get which supports NTFS and is made for intel celerons?

Thanks.

edit: also, do I have to reboot when I have installed the kernel? I know it's best, but I don't really want to reboot each time I install another kernelversion with the hope it works...

RTFM.... (j/k)

uname -r will tell you the kernel version

You HAVE to reboot to load the new kernel and modules.

Does lsmod show the ntfs module? Does the module exist in the new kernels module directory? /lib/modules/<kernel version>/kernel/fs/ntfs/ntfs.o ?

If it does, then try loading the module

insmod ntfs

Sorry as I can't answer the Debian specific questions.

For the NTFS support I needed to compile it myself, which, thanks to the help of manual_overide is done. It's now executing the 'make bzlilo'.
Thanks a lot manual_overide :)

Do the rest of us in this thread at least get a cookie? :(

Hmm cookies... I'm not sure if you deserved it, have you been sweet this year? And isn't it a bit to late for cookies? You know sugar in the evening isn't good, you wont be able to sleep. I'll talk with your mother about a cookie, but I don't promise anything.

It's only 4:35 in the afternoon and I could use another desert besides the two 2L Nestle Mackintosh Carmel and the one 2L of the Nestle Caffe Latte Ice-Cream I bought this morning while out getting groceries.

No mother though. Deceased for nearly 44 years. Father 2 months ago. Do I get the cookies out of sympathy? :(

Ok.. how about this. My house was broken into last night and ALL my cookies were stolen. The police have no leads so far and it's beginning to look like I'll never get them back. The insurance deductible would not be worth the cost of the cookies.

I reinstalled Linux this morning and ALL my cookies are gone.

 Caldera OpenLinux Workstation 3.1.1

NOT WORTH IT? that's inacceptable!

even worse, you have a hard life.
/me hands over the cookies, 'cause i just got my xwindows to work (finally) so i'm in a good mood ;)
