I am looking for some opinions towards sound and video cards for my new system. I am currently running RH 6.2 with a VooDoo3 2000 card that works very well, and a Diamond Sonic Impact S100 that I have been struggling with. I am building a new system which will be running RH 6.2, possibly 7 and want to know what you all think would be good cards to get, both for performance and Linux compatibility, particularly the sound card as that has been my main issue.
Thanks

i know nothing of sound cards, but vid card wise, i'd suggest ati all-in-wonder cards (or just Radeon 64meg DDR). i've heard that ati has good linux support and i know that Nvidia doesn't at all (they work with Micro$oft, what would u expect? [and the GeForce3 is optimized for DirectX8]). Does anyone know if ati is gonna come out with a new card anytime soon?

I don't believe that ATI directly supports Linux with their video cards. They do however release the specs readily for 3rd party drivers to be written. Was reading about that on the ATI site yesterday while reseaching the Radeon. Most of their cards are supported.
Your best bet is to search www.xfree86.org (http://www.xfree86.org) to see what video cards are supported by which X versions and what card features are available.
Soundcards? Most Soundblaster and compatibles are well supported. It also depends on the distro. Mine (eDesktop 2.4) detects and configures my S/B PCI-128 during the install, while I have seen posts here where others have had problems getting the 128 to work.

ATI (and Matrox, 3DFX,) hires Precision Insight to write Linux drivers. If you want good 2D quality, decent 3D, future DVD support, TV capabilities, and open source drivers then choose ATI.
If the only thing you are concerned with is fast 3D rendering, then choose NVIDIA; you won't get anything else though.
For Sound, your best choice is the Creative SB Live series.
