Why doesn't someone in the Toronto area drop by with their digital camera so I can take some shots of my 'computer room'? :(

Maybe I'll borrow one from a friend at the office one of these days. I'll wait until Saturday when I get my twin ViewSonic 19" (black) monitors to go with my new Nvidia FX 5600. Then I'll move my 21" over to the other pc to go with the 17" (Radeon VE). :D

I think It would be cool to see what other computer stuff people have, and what they us it for. I hope this isn't too off topic. But I'll start..

----------------

This is a DEC Alpha server. It has a 8 bay SCSI tower that currently has 5 SCSI drives in it.. 128 megs of ram and a 64 bit 233Mhz cpu. It runs Debian.

-------------------

This is my main workstation 1Ghz Athhlon, 386 megs of ram 30 gig HDD. It runs Debian

http://www.digitalert.net/morepics/amdsticker2.JPG

---------------------

This is a wireless antenna I made..

http://www.digitalert.net/morepics/antenna1.JPG

----------------------

This is a Cisco 350 series AP that is sitting on top of a Cisco UBR 924 cable modem

http://www.digitalert.net/morepics/ap-modem2.JPG

------------------------

The white computer is a P166 128 meg of ram, DHCP/syslog server to get logs from my AP and Router. Running Debian.

It is sitting on top of a Bay Network BayStack 303 switch

http://www.digitalert.net/morepics/dellswitch2.JPG

----------------------------

I made the rack that you can see here and in some of the other pics.. Mounted in the top of it is a Master View Plus 8 port KVM switch

Below it to the right is a crappy RCA cable modem, and to the left of that is a Cisco 806 router that acts as my gateway to the internet and does some basic packet filtering..

http://www.digitalert.net/morepics/kvm3.JPG

--------------------------

This is a laptop, that is mainly used for wireless stuff, but at the moment I am having a pain in the a*s getting the Cisco 352 pcmcia card to work on it..

http://www.digitalert.net/morepics/laptop2.JPG

----------------------------

This is a computer I just built that I hardly ever use. It is also my first attempt at a "case mod." I made it to play games. It runs windows 2000, XP2600 , 2X512 Corsair ram, ATI 9700pro

Did anyone else get the impression we're not No. 1 in the "neatly organized" department?
My trouble is I get the cables all straight for about 2 days and then I have an urge to reconnect or add something into the system and there goes my "cable neatness" award for another few months. But I do have the important stuff right at hand- finding it is the hard part.
This is what mine looks like on a average day:

Sorry for the gigantic photos. I'm new to the whole Mac thing, and iPhoto's being a pain  . Does anyone know of a simple program for the Mac to adjust the quality (read: disk space usage) of a jpg? And for that matter, a program that makes cropping easier...

canon006
08-03-2003, 03:48 AM
nko, Apple's preview app will let you export either to another file format or to a jpg will lower quality settings, just go to export, then select jpg and hit the options button. As for cropping, and/or general image editting you can probably use AppleWorks, but I suggest grabbing a copy of Photoshop Elements 2.0(if you've got an extra $70 hanging around).

So the other say I got 3 Sun SparcStation 2's with a big monitor, some external storage, and a mini-computer called a SparcStation IPC. All for $50.
I just had to take some photos.....

boxes of software and cables... (http://je-fro.port5.com/RRweb/files/dsc01950.jpg)

the stack... (http://je-fro.port5.com/RRweb/files/dsc01952.jpg)

closer... (http://je-fro.port5.com/RRweb/files/dsc01953.jpg)

big 'ol 20" monitor (http://je-fro.port5.com/RRweb/files/dsc01954.jpg)

even closer... (http://je-fro.port5.com/RRweb/files/dsc01956.jpg)

the wreckage.... (http://je-fro.port5.com/RRweb/files/dsc01959.jpg)

I still need to get a DIN-8 cable to hook up the keyboard (hopefully today). These guys won't POST without the keyboard. I'll update when I find out more about them.

1. Thanks!

2. HP kayaks

3. No need for a KVM switch, 3 of the boxes are headless. You start everything from 1 box.

4. My basement is unfinished. The stove is actually a gas stove and only runs for a few minutes at a time to keep the room at a comfortable 60 deg.

5. I usually don't have to work right there I access it remotely. :D

6. I like your set up also.

Must've been the ftp on on comcast's page seemed slow. Yeah, that's my little iBook 800, great for toting back and forth to classes and such, I have yet to attempt Linux on it, since most of the OSS apps I really enjoy either have a Mac port or run on Apple's X11.

11-12-2003, 09:15 PM
That is a 4 line, 24 character LCD display from a company called CrystalFontz. I have it setup to check for new mail, display my current IP, system stats, current music playing, and scores, ping and map name in some online games(Counter Strike and Q3). They just sell the display itself, I got the box from radioshack and mounted the display in it. I've had it for a while and it's useful, my particular model is serial but they offer USB displays now as well (though I don't know if the usb models are supported by linux, the serial ones are though).

here (http://students.millikin.edu/~tmeisenheimer/my_rig.jpg) is my set up. It's 1/3 of my home office. Pictured are my main work station and my router/server Yoda.

My office is a mess, so I'll just describe it. To the right of the pictured desk is another, messy desk with my win-sh*t/linux-testing box. To the back are book cases, my university degrees, and some pictures and trophies.

My set up at school was even better. Contained the same here, just waay more messier and I had 6 old IMBs circa 1983 that were just an inch or two shy of my desk top's height. They weighed at least 60 lbs, possibly more due. We used them for barracades when we threw a jello wrestlig party.

And you don't think that 4 sets of monitors, keyboards, and optionally mice is too much to have on one desk!? Obviously, you have the space, but I'm in cramped quarters, so I had to buy a KVM. Unless I felt like mounting a monitor to my wall ... that's not a bad idea.

Oh, that's not carpet. I've been living in the same room since I was six (13 years ago), so I have a wood floor with a town painted on it. Not like you can really see the floor any more, but it's there. It has a park, football field, baseball field, lake, river, community garden, and nice weather year round.

Thread*
Since this thread is so popular, we are going to reopen a new thread on a monthly basis in /dev/random.

The new thread will appear at the 1st of each month, and will be made stickly so it will always appear near the top of /dev/random.

We hope this new organization will help people find desk shots a little more easily.

Peace,
Brian Proffitt
Do you know of a popular thread full of people's pictures of there deskshots? I believe the intention was to have people post pictures of there screenshots. It was just misinterpeted. Why would you have a recurring thread each month of people's pictures of there desk shots?

Well does it really matter?

It's clearly has been a "desk shots" thred since the beginning, so why not leave it the way it is.
you said so yourself that seeing peoples setups was a nifty idea, so lets just leave it like that.

They all seem to turn out to dark. As far as copying my idea go for it but be warned its a lot of work I don't think I would try it again.

Most impressive rig dude! By far the coolest one here to date...

As for the majority of others, a common theme I am noticing is what a bunch of messy people! Sorry I am a neat freak.

I am at work right now, and from here I am leaving for a weekend of outdoor adventure (again, I camp and back pack almost every weekend now.) but when I return to my domicile I will partake in this thread as well.

Although my set-up will not even come close to Seven up's for cool points, it will beat almost everybody for neatness factor! :D

Neatness factor huh? I see cords on walls, not bundled, sheesh man. :) J/K No seriously though, ive had the please of working for an extremely anal boss for the past couple of years at work and made me completely redo the switches/Patch Panels at work. Ive carried that analism home with me on my home setup. Ill take some pics when I get home of the home setup and then some more tomorrow of the work setup.

with the exception of 7UP I have one of the neater systems / set-ups here. As far as the cables, I haven't gotten around to hiding them yet, mainly because I am rethinking my set-up / location.

That and I haven't had the time to really get in there and clean the wires up yet. But they are bundled with zip ties, look a little closer you will see. The wires up on the wall, are not on the wall but on my desk, and they go to my KVM that I have so I can bounce between systems with a single monitor and keyboard. I have to get a new KVM that supports USB then I can take it down to one track ball.

Why I think I have better neatness, look at the desks and see how just about all the others are clutered with... stuff.Everything on my desk is placed neatly where I can get to it and still have room to put 2-3 laptops on my desk if need be.so NYAH! :p

Finally, both a digital camera working in Linux and a setup sort of worth showing people (I hate dorm rooms:(). Apologies for the size of the images (1600x1200), but I'm in a hurry because I should be doing homework  That's also why I forgot to turn off the ugly timestamp, which was on for a class project.

The whole setup (except the printer which you can't see because it's in the corner behind the tower:)):
http://students.luther.edu/~nemebe01/FarwellSetup0001.jpeg

A little closer view of the computer part (kinda hard to see, but the fan grill on the side fan is a UT logo):
http://students.luther.edu/~nemebe01/FarwellSetup0002.jpeg

The aforementioned printer that you can't see in any other picture. For reference, it's on the shelf below the stereo in the other pictures. It's not very good, but it's so much better quality than my last one and it cost less than two new cartridges so I don't care:)
http://students.luther.edu/~nemebe01/FarwellSetup0003.jpeg

Another angle, more like the one I look at every day. My darn 17" flat panel is so bright that it washed itself out in this picture. Not complaining about 12 ms though:D In case you're wondering, the lights on the front of the case do change colors. They cycle from blue to red to green. I occasionally just sit and watch them when I need a break. It's kind of hypnotic:)

Yeah, I'm usually a slob but if I let my room get too messy it becomes impossible to find anything or even walk across the room, so it forces me to be a little neater:)

That you do bro. I feel your pain about always wanting to redo things. Im that was as well. My desk supports my gaming rig, linux box, G4 cube, and a Proliant server although I just moved it and all it has hooked to it is 3 power cords and a Cat6 cable. I terminal into that box so I didnt really have a need for it to be on a monitor, KB, mouse. Im looking for some cabel management solutions. Do you know of any?

Ill post some pics ASAP.

Do ya want an award? After all, the lines on your floor show that it was freshly vacuumed (like, right before the shot to show off your cleanliness). Not to mention, your CD's are all strangely arranged...

But like you stated, Seven up has got you beat- so it's just "second-best." Not only that, but I'd argue the canon006 has got you beat as well (earlier posts)... Losing places quickly here, huh?

Claiming bragging rights, then giving a "touched up" proof isn't all that convincing... But, stupid is as stupid does, not right?

I had just finished cleaning my house, yes. I vacuum every other day. See the cat? He sheds a lot and is an indoor cat. So I have to vacuum, other wise that hair ends up in my cooling fans. Also I dust every 3-4 days. The CD's are now in a box organized by OS (Platform), and Alphabetic. All I said was my set-up is cleaner than most here. Am I anal about keeping my house clean? Maybe but after 14 years of field day's and sweepers, you would be too.

Next weekend the whole thing comes down, I have finally found a location in my apartment where I want everything set-up. When it is done I will post updated images. With the cables properly bundled and hidden from view.

By the way how long you been an LNO member? Oh sorry Just Linux now... if you had been around back in the "day" of Sensei and Linux Girl, you would know my posting style and understand that I like to have "fun" sometimes. But whatever...

i found this at kde-look.org so if you want you can look there but i don't know if they have one that is like that. i do believe that icewm has a theme already installed that looks very much like the classic style windows theme. i have also heard that fvwm has something similar also. you have want to have a look at them.

Many of you guys have multiple computers in the same room. Some of you have more than 3. I was wondering whether or not any of you are worried about possibly over loading the circuit breakers or maybe even starting fires in your computer rooms??
I ask because I have almost 3 power bars filled up in my room and the idea of causing a fire tends to cross my mind on occasion....I dunno if there is actually any threat of it happening or not but it does cross my mind.

Well when I moved back to college I had more stuff than I could fit into my room so I took over the guest room. I had my uncle, an electrical engineer, set the wiring up for me so I won't burn the house down or anything crazy like that.

I currently have three computers, soon to be four (getting a new Mac for the holiday's) and will move my old dorm fridge into the office once I clean the college gunk out of it. Oh, I also have a 1500 watt space heater in here to heat up the room even more b/c I'm sick. I'm pretty careless and haven't set the house or any other place I've lived with my computers on fire yet.

Okay, inquiring minds want to know, is it Half-Life 2?:D

Edit: Or are you just trying to pump up your Folding@Home score?;)

Heh....neither one of those.
I'm doing computational chemistry for the next year or five, so I need a fast box.
The reasons you mentioned are nice too, though. :D

Sounds kinda interseting, and I guess nicely justifies such a pretty purchase :) .

It would be pretty hardcore if you just built it for Doom.:)

Yeah, I feel kinda guilty. I built my new computer over the summer and played with it for a couple of months then, but since school has started all I've used it for is boring schoolwork (writing papers and such). I didn't even have a decent CS class that required a lot of compiling. It's almost over though and I can get back to doing something other than Folding with the CPU:)

I don't have a camera on me, currently, so just imagine my setup: Black case with a blue cathode light inside, a nice plexiglass window to see inside unobstructed, 2.0 GHz... And it hums like a lawnmower. :D

Feh. The beauty of Linux is that is runs on anything... from state of the art hardware to dumpster diving discoveries.

Lotsa people like to post their rigs in their sig. I usually take a quick look to see if it's recent looking, if it is, I stop reading. What I really like to see are people running Linux on old, crappy hardware. That's where its at. :D

None of my computers are new, and it's a beautiful thing.

Ah, so you answer yes to the "Are you satisfied with your old computer" thread:) I personally want my computer to respond instantly to at least most of my actions (opening programs and such) and until it does I won't be completely satisfied:p

Back on topic, I discovered when I took my case home over Christmas (Linux rocks, I just used my laptop to ssh in and I didn't even have to bring home a monitor to get access to everything on my desktop. And it was easy:D) that all of the clear plastic on it is UV reactive. I turned on my black light and the friggin case lit up like a neon sign. I'll try to remember to take a picture tonight to post (it wouldn't look as good in daylight).

And here's the actual picture of my case with a UV light shining on it. Can't wait to take it to the LAN party this weekend:D

If that doesn't work let me know. Our web server has been a little weird lately and I had a lot of trouble getting it to let me upload the image. It works for me, but that doesn't mean a whole lot:rolleyes:

New case I setup for better cooling, turned out the only <21dBa fans newegg had were red, ohh well :D...

Managed to keep my proc @ 36C (98.6F) when running FAH and about 27C when playing games (why the difference I do not know)

9.99 for the case (4.00USD shipping via my fedex account)
8.99 for each 120MM fan
12.00 for all 6 LED's
1.99 for AC filter
2.99 for gutter guard
5.00 for the black tubing

Cutting the front out and fitting everything together took about 7 hours the previous day, I got everything wired in and strapped down then powered her up and the rear psu fan blew up, sparks and all :(, took me 40 minutes to unwrap everything to access the psu then another 30 to get it angled and opened and replaced. no more than an hour later it was back in the case and working fine...

1 Hour later:

okay, have a look at this and weep ;-)...

I don't have a digital camera, so I'll just give you a short overview of my computer's components:

Pentium 133 MHz
64 MB RAM
17 GB HDD with three partitions
1. SuSE 9.0
2. SuSE 8.2
3. (I admit it) Windows 98 (now rarely used, honest!)
2 MB RAM graphic card

I think that's a good example that Linux will run on about any kind of computer. The KDE runs very sluggishly but Window Maker does a fine job.
I love my old computer though, I'd never give it away (I can't imagine that anyone would want it, but anyway...)
The day will come when I get myself a Mac, though *dreaming* :)

Heh... up until 3 days ago I was still running X on a 2MB S3 Trio64V+. It actually did an acceptable job at 1024x768, 65K colours, 60Hz refresh. <sob>

But now, I've reached the big time at last, going totally berzerk with a used (surprise) 16MB nVidia Riva TNT. Woo hooey!

(It is *great* what Linux will support. :D)

This is my old desk setup. I had this setup for years. It's a makeshift desk :/ and also really... _really_ small

This is after I got my new desk (about two and a half weeks ago, from my mother's office, she had no use for it). Notice that it's nice and... _clean_. It stayed that way for about five minutes.

And this is it now. It's dirty as all get out. The laptop in the picture is my mom's (it used to be mine, but it rarely works, and i have no use for it anyways -_-), which is currently not posting. I also recently moved my system into a new case.. i don't actually have two computers :( And also. that's my pet stuffed monkey, george. say hi george!
