Obviously they're both Gnome, but what is the difference between the two?

What about window managers? Does ximian allow you to select the window manager that you want to use?

Ximian gnome is easier to install (if you have one of the supported distros) and includes it own auto-updater to make sure you gnome is up to date.

It will let you do anything normal gnone will, including choosing your window manager.

I prefer Ximian but I think regular Gnome has become Ximian Gnome hasn't it?

Nope...regular gnome is still regular gnome, as far as I know.

...........so the GNOME installed with RH7 is not the same GNOME I can download from Ximian?

Hrm.. Is there any reason I should/shouldn't download the ximian gnome?

Everything's working fine as is.. Maybe I'll leave it that way. The last time I tried to upgrade a desktop it ended in disaster (tried to install KDE2).

The Ximian GNOME upgrade path has been made very easy...I don't know that KDE has anything its equivalent.

THough I ususally take the, if it ain't broke don't fix it approach, I personally had no problems migrating from GNOME to Ximian GNOME and I do that immediately after installing Linux on a system.

Then I go crazy and get Red Carpet and Nautilus too....that has a higher possibility of blowing up your system...

Ximian GNOME shouldn't blow your system up.

Just my experience...

Ximian gnome dosen't realy add enough to warrent changing you current gnome. However, if you want the auto update, the install is very easy. There's just a lot of downloading involved.

Other than an updated GNOME. Plus it is almost necessary now with amny GTK+ apps.
