I cant load up Knoppix normally..I have to use 'failsafe' to get in. Ne ideas on how to get in? ive tried most options( i think) but knoppix vga=normal is the most promising.brings me all the way to the kernel boot.
BTW-Refer to my thread on 'to intall or not to on a ME box' to get full details.
P.S I really want to learn about Linux so please dont hesitate posting adavanced stuff as long as u guys give a walkthrough :p
Thanks in Advance

Hmmm - don't have a lot of time so this'll be quick:
Did you try the i810 driver? Did anything happen? Try it again, but in combination with screen=640x480.

Ok i just tried the problem still exists.... cant seem to get to work without ' failsafe'. Now im planning to get a full install of a good newb distro.... Ne suggestions? Also can neone recommend a hD partitoner....I tried partition magic but it was on trial so it dint work.... i would like the distro to be preferably free and have a wide-user base so i cant check with other ppl how to do stuff.
Thanks

You can get many recommendations on distros suited for newbies either by using the search function or by reading a couple threads in the "iso confused" section.
Considering that SuSE is very friendly to newbies, has one of the largest driver databases, and comes with a good partitioning tool, I recommend SuSE for you. :)

Personally, I still like Ubuntu for newbies, but any of the bigger name distributions will do.

Since youve been learning on Knoppix, Id recommend Mepis or Ubuntu. What you learned on Knoppix should apply to those as well, for the most part.
Suse is always great for newbies though.

DVD-eval is everything under the sun.
DVD-live-eval is a live DVD (not installable)
Mini-iso is a network install. Just has the basic core and installer for installing over a broadband connection by selecting what packages you want.
Id suggest the DVD-eval so you can see everything, and pick your favorite desktop, etc
But if youre so happy using Ubuntu, why switch? Keep learning on that by getting the installable version from http://www.ubuntulinux.org/download/

Mepis and Suse both include the QTparted tool, but Mepis can run it from the CD without having installed first. This will allow you to resize and manipulate partitions much like you would with the Windows program "Partition Magic".
You wont be able to install it on NTFS, it needs a Linux native file system. But you could make room for a Linux partition on your hard drive with this tool.

You can only burn CDs, then.
Suse usually runs about 90 bucks. If you want the full version of Suse on DVD you will have to buy it, or find someone to burn the DVD and hope you drive reads that format of DVD, which is a lot of hassle.
I dont really recommend the FTP install, as even if broadband it could tie up your machine installing overnight, or longer. If you have a cable connection, go ahead, but itll still be around 3-5 hours for a full featured desktop install.
www.mepis.org Try this out, instead. One CD with KDE, lots of software, and installable. Its a lot like Knoppix, but even easier to set up.
You could also try this www.kanotix.com . It sticks close to its Knoppix roots, but with improvements for installation.
