I was using Xine which worked fine other than video playback would jump around in the open window.
So I decided to installed mplayer, video is great, but I am getting no sound.
I read through the man pages and tried invoking -ao ALSA
but that hasn't done anything
Any suggestions
I should mention that amixer indicates everything is on

are you typing alsa in uppercase? if so then it won't work. needs to be '-ao alsa'. Also if youtr not then another possibility is that alsa support wasn't compiled in. Try 'mplayer -ao help' for a list of audio output plugins you have enabled.

Thanks for the quick reply
alsa is listed among the available output drivers

are you able to hear sound with any other output plugin? Also 'mplayer -ao alsa <your file>|grep alsa' should help you find out what the problem is.

This is going to sound stupid, but I found the problem.
My son must have been watching a DVD with Xine, before I install mplayer.
The head phones he uses were still plugged into the back of the box.
mplayer works fine.
Thanks for all the replies
I'll just go and put on my dunce cap now
