Hi all,

I tried it on a dell server. No tweaks, no customizations, just plain out of the box suse 9.0 vs suse 9.1 !!! I dont know why, but 9.1 was lot lot faster !

Following were very rudimentry tests -

- Untaring files was very fast
- Compiling programs took much much less time
- I downloaded postgres source, compiled it and installed it in the same way on both versions. And then I had to carry out massive record inserts on a table. This was a key. The inserts were atleast 7 times faster on 9.1 than on 9.0 !!

Any thoughts, or I had a little too much cough syrup today ? !!

Thanks,
Amit

Do you think that there's something wrong with the newer version being faster?

9.1 uses kernel 2.6, and 9.0 uses 2.4. There is usually a significant speed difference between those kernels when using any distro.

Suse 9.1 is i586 optimised and 9.0 is i386 optimised which makes for a faster system along with the 2.6 kernel. 9.2 is also i586 optimised.
