I've got a quick question. My 20GB hard drive is rapidly filling up with data, much of which is most likely garbage such as core dumps, temp files, etc. My question is this: What types of files are useless and safe to delete to conserve space? Additionally, is there a way to limit core dump file sizes? i'm frequently finding large 'deposits' in my homedir which get quite large after a while. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Well, for starters, core dumps are generated when a process chokes, so if you're getting a lot of core files, you might want to find the cause and fix it. Aside from that, core files and the contents of temp directories can usually be trashed (anyone know of exceptions?). Also, look in /var/log; log files can get pretty huge.
