There is a site. linuxgaming.com or something like that. just google/linux for it and you will find plenty of answers about linux and games. There are also a number of threads on here about games. Search the forums, they are very helpful and answering a most of your questions.

Unreal Tournament GOTY is really easy to install and works perfectly.

battalax
02-12-2005, 01:43 PM
Yeah , I second that. ut goty was an easy install and I personally think it runs faster in linux then it did in windows.
Ut goty is not like 9.00 $ an amazon.com or something like that and its all around a good game.
Depending upon the hardware that your machine has ut2004 also works under ut with an easy install but like i said you need the hardware for it .

Doom 3 is native to Linux as well, a demo can be found at id software's FTP (ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/) server. You'll just have to look around for it. :)

Enemy Territory is a free (for Windows and Linux) game by id. It's multiplayer only like America's Army or Counter-Strike.

And there is a mod for ET that was just released the other day called True Combat: Elite. It's based on the Quake 3 mod of the same name.

http://www.linux-gamers.net/modules/news/article.php?storyid=687

Other cool Open Sour games that are in my Fluxbox menu:

Cube
First person shooter
http://www.cubeengine.com

Death Illustrated
Based on the Cube Engine
http://www.deathillustrated.com

Flight Gear
Flight Simulator
http://www.flightgear.org

Frozen Bubble
Arcade style game
http://www.frozen-bubble.org/

Not Open Source but still free and fun to play:

GTA and GTA2
These are freeware now (You'll need WINEX or CEDEGA to play them)
http://www.rockstargames.com/classics/

Also the Quakes and Dooms play nicely on Linux, although you'll need the WAD files to play them. Some people have written free WAD files, you'll just have to search for them. Running apt-cache search doom brings up a lot of results in Debian.

And I've never played this but I've always wanted to, Text Mode Quake:
http://webpages.mr.net/bobz/ttyquake/

The above game is True Combat, I had Total Combat

I have played it now and then over 10 years already. Even met wizard of Yendor once...but the damn bastard killed me. :(

Other than that... Targetware (http://www.targetware.net/index.php). Best online flightsim ever.

I thoroughly recommend Enemy Territory (http://www.enemy-territory.com), which is free (as in beer, not as in freedom), and also Return to Castle Wolfenstein (should be able to get cheaply - get the GOTY edition / Extended edition) both of which run natively.

Postal 2 has also just been released for Linux - might be worth checking out.

I also have Unreal Tournament 2003 running nicely on Linux.

And check out Frozen Bubble - very addictive.

Yes, that is a UT2004 mod (won the top spot in the "Make Something Unreal Contest" (http://www.unrealtournament.com/ut2003/ct_finals/))

Another great game from the contest that is a top-down RTS style mod for UT2004 is Alien Swarm (http://www.blackcatgames.com/swarm/)

You might want to check out Cedega as well from transgaming technologies. If you have any windows based games you want to play under linux. http://www.transgaming.com/ It seems to have made some progress since the days of winex.

I also recommend Enemy Territory...you need it to play True Combat anyway.

And for those that like penguins and like lemmings, I recommend Pingus

I agree that this can be a solution, but as I can see it just has to be the last solution of them all...

The fact that Cedega exists has the effect that some companys refuses to make a native linux-client. They point at Cedega.

With this solution we will never be a first choise operationg system!

I, myselt do really want to play the game "World of Warcraft", but they seem to refuse us the right to run it native under Linux.

I signed :) I hope we will see more and more games with native linux support in the future. I do believe that cedega supports WoW though correct? I personally enjoy everything linux has to offer, the only reason I would currently use windows right now for is to play a game that isnt supported under linux to be honest. There is nothing that I personally cant do under linux that I could do under windows besides play certain unsupported games.

Sweet :) I dont think it will be to long before we start seeing dual releases of games for windows and linux. I think ID already does this now with their releases but they are the only major developer to do so.

I believe that openGL is still considered experimental in linux at this point but once it isnt we will see more linux gaming support from developers I hope. I was reading on anandtech.com the other day that nvidia and ati seem to have started some sort of linux video driver war...thats a good sign if you ask me :)

But it has been known that you could get Half Life to work with Wine/Cedega. and that's not specifically meaning a Linux version.

jmhiggins
02-25-2005, 04:36 PM
Yeah but I was saying that maybe that is what he meant? I havent heard of a native linux client for HL 2 you'd think that would be pretty big gaming news.

We need proof. :) He's trolling, there is no native port for Half-Life (server only) but Steam and Half-life run VERY well under Cedega.

Blizzard will NEVER port ANY of their games to Linux, they seem to have something personal against it with claims that it is too easy to pirate games on Linux (and use Loki games as 'proof')

The companies that do support Linux will show it by releasing a Linux port alone with (or soon after) the Windows release. The ones that do not make releases usually use the 'copy protection' argument, not the 'it runs with Cedega' argument as the anti-wine people like to claim.
(Ask them for proof of this is you will be lucky that they can offer even one company that has said it in written form. If they do offer links it's usually to other soothsayer comments like the one thanquol claims.)

If you really want to play WoW under Linux and not pay for Cedega (by being good and no pirating it) it works with regular Wine

I just wish Cedega was free, so I could actually play all my major games without having to be tempted to install Windows.

jmhiggins
02-25-2005, 04:58 PM
Sometimes you just have to pay for worthwhile products. :)

davisfactor
02-25-2005, 08:13 PM
If you don't want to pay for cedega, there are sevaral guides to installing the CVS version.

If you do want to pay for cedega, it's only $5 US dollars a month. You have to buy 3 months up-front but even then, 15 dollars to support the company that lets you play most windows games under Linux is a very small price. That price also includes Point-to-Play or something like that which from what I understand is a graphical interface to installing games under Cedega.

Here's an awesome site for help with installing games under Cedega.
