I've probably done many things like this, but this
time is the only time I thought of posting it.

I was explaining to a person the origin of the word "assassin." Originally, an "assassin" was a person who smoked hashish. This (http://www.alamut.com/subj/ideologies/alamut/etymolAss.html) page has multiple etymologies for the word, but I was only explaining the one that involved hashish.

This person then told another person what I had just told her, but she used the word "hash" rather than "hashish."

Here's the nerdy part: I thought of "#" rather than hashish.

So I'm wondering what other people have done that only a nerd would do. And I'm sure that I have more; I just can't think of them now.

As one of my non-nerdy friends likes to chide us CS-geeks, not giggling when someone says gooey frontend.

Can't happpen to me, in my language a # is called "Gartehaag" (= "garden fence").

I found hard candy's story rather cool when his daughter asked him if she can go for a drive and he asked her how many GB she needed. :D

I was taking a look at our new $100CAD bill and as a security feature it has tiny writing on it which consists of the number 100 repeated over and over....the first thought that came to my mind was...Why do they have binary on this bill??

My friend the other day was checking out BB guns and while reading the specs he read the speed as frames per second(fps) rather than feet per second(fps).

My girlfriend finds it "hot" when I share information about computers. Especially if I get specific. I find it funny she finds that hot. :)

So, its possible to be "nerd sexy" who knew? :)

The other day having multiple dreams about ways that I could make basic Ascii "images" show up in a terminal by doing variations of the "ls" command in a directory and then pipeing it into other commands....

Well I have had a bad cold for the past few days, and was up till 6AM writing a script so its ok right?

Well, looking at the reaction of a non-nerd while explaining it to them, and how it could be done...

Not good....

I tell every Amanda I meet what her name means in Latin :/.

I felt quite nerdy today remotely logging into my machine and using IRSSI from a public lab.

I find a woman who doesn't intellectually bore me to be attractive, but it's damn hard to find anyone who doesn't intellectually bore me. Even smart people, who just don't know when to shutup, or just won't stop talking about the same damn subject.
I got so bored the other night hearing about Overclocking, I think I ended up telling him he wasn't allowed to talk about that anymore.

I'm finding it pretty funny that I'm laughing at this thread.

Here's something that I did with some friends on Friday at school.

These friends were all on the math team. On a chalkboard, we wrote:

ALL YOUR BASE
ARE BELONG
TO US

chown us /home/you/base*

42
6 x 9 = 4213

Another thing:

I found it funny that people have AIM away messages like, "dinner," "shower," "phone," so, for a few weeks, I set my away message to be "Fresh Meat." I think two people instant messaged me when I was away, and one of them was entirely confused by it.

My statistics class is in room 404, and I never have my homework. The joke writes itself.

I laughed at the shirt
"Roses are #FF0000
Violets are #0000FF
and all my base
are belong to you"
...and so did my friends. (The shirt is on thinkgeek)

You know you've been programming php too long when you start typing echo "Whats going on\?"; in msn.

I am so jealous!

My nerdiest moment was when I realized that "Protonix"-- a prescription medication I've been taking for acid reflux-- would make a great name for a Unix-based operating system or Linux distro.

Since 42 is the meaning of life does this equation mean when your 13 the meaning of life is 69?:-D

She's just using you for techs. :D

Yesterday a guy at church told me, out of the blue, that I look like an IT pro. I found that funny since I'm a biochemist and prefer pippettes to keyboards. Mind you I have been known to install Gentoo for fun on a Friday night so he wasn't far off! :p

Tambo, that's why I switched to books like Programming Pragmatics; trying the things would be so much work I'm not about to do it; and most of it isn't code anyway it's psuedo code.

But then again, I almost never read for myself anymore; stupid college and news checking addiction.

I just bought a new car, a Pontiac Sunfire, and couldn't help noticing the potential references to Mozilla projects (Sunbird and Firefox):)

Then later I saw the odometer hit 512 and thought it was a significant milestone:D

My latest nerdy moment:

I have an old P-II machine with windows 98 on it. It's been in storage for over a year. I set it up and turned it on and the fan in the power supply was clanging away on something. So, I turned it off, opened the case, took the power supply (http://home.earthlink.net/~bennies_1/00019.jpg) out, opened the case on it (being careful not to do anything to catch my hair on fire), and discovered that the spindle/bearing (http://home.earthlink.net/~bennies_1/00021.jpg) was wearing out in the fan such that the blade was sort of hanging down and banging on another part of the power supply guts.

So, today I went in search of another fan with a 2 prong connector (http://home.earthlink.net/~bennies_1/00023.jpg) for con2 for this old 200 Watt Power Supply. Went to Radio Shack and MicroCenter, but finally found one at Alltex. Anyway, so the new fans have a 3 prong connector. So, went back to Radio Shack (it's closer to the house) and bought some tiny little wire nuts and went back to the house. Cut the connectors off the old fan and the new fan (http://home.earthlink.net/~bennies_1/00024.jpg) . Put the 2 prong connector on the new fan red and black wires, just left the yellow wire hanging. Plugged it all back in and it works like a charm.
:D

Oh, and that machine is now running with a W2k machine and slackware 10.1 maching folding proteins for Stanford. :)

Well, this relates to my comment on another thread about a time in class when the prof wrote UT: Emptiness on the board and my trigger finger started itching;)

This time it was the same class, same prof, but he wrote "Buddha Inside" on the board, and I immediately thought *Cue Intel theme*:)

I bet you wish the $100 bill was in binary! :)

Hmm, 100 decimal or 100 binary? Nope, I'll stick with the decimal version.:)
