Debian/cable/pon/poff

I'm asking this on behalf of a friend. I'm a debian user, but have only ever used dial-up modem with pon/poff etc.

He is installing debian potato and wants to apt-get dist-upgrade. Can pon/poff be configured for cable? I'm presuming it can. If not, what tools can be used to connect from the cli?

I beleive this person wants dhcp client?

apt-get install dhclient ...

typing: dhclient will launch it once Debian does its thing. It should detect everything and bring the interface up. To make sure, type: ifconfig.
