Here's my 550mhz Pentium 3 running a KDE desktop on Knoppix.
2048x1536 version (http://www.geocities.com/mechdan/snapshot4.html)
I've also attached a low quality 1024x768 scaled down version for if Geocities runs into the bandwidth limit or you have a pathetic low resolution screen display. :p
The curved glass lens effect window borders are Crystal-GL (available at KDE-Look.org).
The window sitters are MacoPix.
The hordes of penguins are xpenguins, but with the source code somewhat modified by myself to make them less flickery (makes a huge difference on a PIII).

Has anyone been here long enough to remember this wall I made quite some time ago.....
http://tinyurl.com/46mcy .......the one titled "Art from Artemis". It seems to be credited to someone named Artemis. While imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, taking credit for someone elses work isn't. (end of daily rant):p

Try as I might, there may not be a snappy answer to this particular question. I like to use a desktop for each task. This gives me ready access to each task and perfect control of where I keep each task in relation to each other.

enable the xorg composite extention then use 'transset' with your desired transparency level (in that screen firefox is using .7).

Current (http://www.public.iastate.edu/~chris129/images/Screenshot40.png)
Engage and Xfwm4 --compositor=on
Stability rating: 7
Engage uses 10% cpu all the time. Xfwm compositor doesn't play as well with firefox dialogues as I'd like, and occasionally just screws lists up. But the server only crashes while I'm trying to change things around a lot.
