Gday mate,
Well to start off with you need to know what kind of sound hardware you have... you say you don't have any, but if you can play music it must be coming from somewhere. :)
Try dropping into Console as root and typing the command: lspci
This will list all PCI devices (including AGP) in your computer... assuming you have a PCI soundcard it should come up. Otherwise isapnp should locate your soundcard if it is an ISA card.
If your card is onboard you will need to check the motherboard manual or look it up on the internet to find out what kind of sound hardware it uses. Usually something like AC97 is pretty generic.
After you have identified your sound hardware, you need to load the module for it... I recommend going to www.google.com/linux (http://www.google.com/linux) and doing a search for <yoursoundcardmodel> modules. That should turn up a bit of information. Otherwise just post your soundcard details here and someone should be able to help you.
There is a Sound Howto in /usr/doc/en-txt/HOWTO/... have a read of that, should give you some idea of the process.

P.S. If you have a Diamond Monster 3D soundcard... get the modules from http://aureal.sourceforge.net ... that's just in case you do. :)
