i know this question has been beaten to death but i am wondering which distro would be recommended for me.
running rh6.1 on server in console mode only...like it. trying to migrate from w95 to linux desktop for everyday use. dont care for gnome...like kde. using MD 8.1 on p2 400/64M/2.5G. seems kind of slo. thinking MD 7.2(figuring it wont be as taxing on cpu?). but everybody says slack all the way. does slack kick ***? is it light and fast? is it hard to work with? my skill level is probably an A-Level newbie just about ready to move to moderate proficiency. i like lite and fast OS w/o all the cute "start-up tips, and desktop themes, blah blah blah. what to do?
thanks v_w

Dump Linux and install a BSD. If you want to stick with Linux, try Debian or Slack.

i have confusion as to the difference between BSD and linux. i assume that they both use X but what makes BSD "BSD" as oppsed to what makes linux "linux". and what is curve like in BSD. i kind of like the enormous amount of resources availble for help with lin.
thanks again

Slack is light and fast, but requires a lot of reading to get it up. If you want to learn how Linux works inside, Slack is the way to go.

BSD and Linux are two totally different operating systems. Both are UNIX based, and if you master one, you shouldn't have trouble using the other. However, they both work pretty differently on the administration side. FreeBSD makes a good server as well as desktop, and is probably the most functional desktop BSD available. OpenBSD and NetBSD are geared more towards the server side and they excel in it. Linux makes a great server too, but they're trying to get it to do both server and destkop jobs.
