Hello everyone,
First of all, thank you for the help in the Forum that has help me with problems. I am just learning Linux and I am still a newbie, everyone here has been a huge help. On a lighter note I have been looking for a MP3 decoder/player. Can anyone suggest one for Linux enterprise? The default one does not seem to be working.

linux enterprise? Being RH Enterprise?

xmms is a good player....looks like Winamp....but some distro's disable MP3 support for legal reasons...but you can add it by finding teh xmms-mp3 add-on

I don't know why everyone likes XMMS so much. Sure, it looks like Winamp, but then Winamp is an eyesore which doesn't even match the look and feel of Windows, much less any of the popular Linux desktop environment.

Assuming you're using the KDE desktop (there's a "K" in the corner where the Windows "Start" button would be), then I recommend Kaffeine. Kaffeine is a media player based on xine which can play just about any audio or video media file. That way, you only have to learn one program to play either type of file, rather than one for audio and another for video.

As for encoding...the typical thing in Linux is to encode mp3's with specifically designed encoding software, rather than integrating an encoder within a media player. I don't encode mp3's, so I don't personally know what's good.

But I recommend downloading some brighter skins, the default is really hard to read. One nice feature is that you can import playlists and EQ settings from Winamp on your windows box.

The kde bundled app 'kaboodle' works pretty well.

If you're a command line junky, try mpg123, it takes about 2 mintes to figure it out and it's very robust.
(mpg123 --help <enter>)

I should probably also ask, is the problem just with the mp3 player, or do you have a larger sound problem?

As far as encoding, haven't gotten into that on linux yet, but I use CDex in windows and it is awesome.
