I am tring to install Mandrake 8.1 onto a pentium 400 mhz system with 256 megs of ram. It is using ide drives. It also has a zip drive on the IDE channel.

When I do the install I get the following message repeating "hdb: lost interrupt"

I am trying to search out the answer but most people are writing after an install not during. This is the first thing to come up. (other than the F1 or enter screen)

I have never run Linux period other than Winlinux for a very short while. This system is clean. It has not other OS loaded. DO I need to format the disk or anything. It is currently DOS formatted. I am going to disconnect the ZIP and see if that helps at all.

Thank you for any help. If you need any other info I will be happy to provide.

Can you please supply your HD list, and connection info (HD connection i mean), becouse, as iguess, the HDB is your ZIP drive, and it may couse some problem, so please write the List of your HD's as they connected (Primary Master, Slave, Secondary Master, Slave)

The Cd-Rom is (I belive the primary master) It is on it's own IDE channel.

The Zip drive I think was acting as the master. When I disconnected it the BIOS told me it could not find primary master but I F1'ed past that and install comtinued. I don't know who set the zip up as the master but it was. I am trying to fix all of that.

It does appear the zip was the problem. I will post more in a couple of minutes.

Okay the install has moved forward. Now I just need to correct a BIOS problem. It is formating the drive "YEAH!" I am quite excited about this.

Thank you very much for your help. I am really looking forward to this.

I can give you a small advise :
Connect Your HD as Primary Master
The Zip as Primary Slave
and the CDROM as Secondary Master
Then reinstall the Linux

All those are only if you don't have any other system installed, and you don't mind to do the installation again ;-)

BTW : You can rate me, if you liked my help ;-)
