I'm duel booting windows XP professional with SUSE Linux 9.2 and would like to completely install Both Windows XP And SUSE Linux professional edition then install Ubuntu Linux as a one and only OS No duel boot the only OS I want installed on this computer is Ubuntu Linux.

Right now I'm using the disk that don't install on the hard drive.

Ubuntu is based on Debian so far I'm really loving this new version of Linux

I just now tried calling Dells technical support to ask them to help assisting me with un instaling all the Os-s on the computer however some_wINDOWS virus has infected the windows world and the technicians will not be able to answer the phone for 5 or so hours or longer everyone their mother brother and sister is calling for help to remove the virus so I'd probably be on the phone all night.

I don't know how to remove all the Operating systems that are installed on this computer and was wondering if anyone here would advise me how to completely un- install, everything on the hard drive ( I'm duel booting windows xp along with SUSE Linux 9.2 professional edition.

After the hard drive is formated and all the old OS-s are un installed I'd like to install Ubuntu Linux and make it my New OS.

Any suggestions will be very much appreciated

The installation of Ubuntu has a Partition Manager. You're gonna want to choose it's option of erasing the entire disk. Since we're not really concerned with losing data here (in fact that's what we want - to lose all the data), you're pretty safe. Just go ahead and jump in.

Technically, there is no real way to install ubuntu form the livecd :(. However, here (http://www.ubuntulinux.org/wiki/InstallFromKnoppixHowto) is a link to install from knoppix, which should be pretty much what you need to do (only from your ubuntu livecd).

If that doesn't work out for you then you can go here (http://www.ubuntulinux.org/wiki/InstallFromOtherDistroHowto). This will explain how to install form another linux distribution (you will need to boot into suse). During the install you should choose to format the entire drive.

goodluck,

Ps. DjTeriyake, he said he is using the livecd...

Dont screw around trying to install from that live CD. Just go to www.ubuntulinux.org and download and burn the install version. Install with that, and during setup when you boot from it, it will give you the option to erase your entire disk. Thats it!

Ubuntu is up and running
Just inserted the installation disk into the CD rom followed the directions and Ubuntu did the rest, Didn't think the installation would be so simple.

Some time ago I attempted to upgrade from windows XP to xp professional edition I inserted xp pros installation disk without first un installing windows home edition and wound up blowing up the hard drive wasn't sure if the same thing would happen when installing Ubuntu so figured I'd come here, ask first just to make sure thanks for the replies.

Oh I went to Ubuntus website and ordered the entire package
They sent me 10 disk all pressed. the package came with a disk that installed Ubuntu on the hard drive and a trail disk that didn't. I was using the trail disk that didn't install on the hard drive when I wrote the last reply then decided Ubuntu was better then SUSE and went ahead and erased all the other OS-s that was installed on this system and installed Ubuntu.

So far as I know this computers, for the first time has nothing to do with Microsoft no duel boot no other OS-s just Ubuntu, Linux.:D

I dual boot my laptop between XP Pro and Ubuntu. I need XP for games and Photochop but that's about it. I just installed Ubuntu 2 days ago and I love it! Everything works so nicely. It even detected my wireless card and everything. I'd never configured wireless before so I was a little worried about that but all I had to do was setup the SSID and the encryption and such. The only thing I find somewhat annoying is the whole sudo process but it's not that terribly bad, just different than what I'm used to. Anyway, hope your experience with it will be as good as mine so far :)

The only problem that I'm having with Ubuntu is with the Downloading method that it uses to extract downloads.
Ubuntu came pre equipped with fire fox 9 and I wanted to upgrade to the latest version so I went to fire foxes website and downloaded the tar bal now I can't find the download or know how to install it

SUSE ( The only version of Linux I know how to use) came with a program that extracted tar balls I'm not to sure about Ubuntu though.

Fire foxes website had instructions on how to install the latest release with Linux here is what the dirrictions said to do> Extract the tarball and run the installer like so:
tar -xzvf firefox-1.0.installer.tar.gz
cd firefox-installer
./firefox-installer
If you have Nautilus set up to run Executable Text Files you can just double click fire- fox-installer to run.

I followed the direction and still no go
I looked for the program Nautilus and can't find it so I'm not sure if I need to install Nautilus in order to be able to extract files

Any ideas on what's wrong I'm guessing that I might have to download a program from the net or I don't know lol

There is an Ubuntu backport project (http://sourceforge.net/projects/ubuntu-bp) that has Firefox 1.0. Works perfectly.

I'm in Windows at the moment so I can't check, but you should be able to use apt/synaptic to update Firefox. Have you tried that yet?

You will find a lot of Ubuntu specific help at the Ubuntu Forums (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/).

Unless you need to compile a program, forget about tar balls. Instead, learn all you can about "synaptic". You'll be glad you did.

Also, here is a very special page for Ubuntu people.

Not using the normal warty repositories. Firefox along with all of the other software released in warty will remain as is except for security updates.

Hello everybody thanks for the reply s sorry it took me so long to respond to them
Ubuntu Linux is awesome it's not to mickey mouse and not to complicated for Noobs.
I finally got firefox updated to the newest version, installed Nvidia drivers and upgraded the Kernel to one that is most computable with Intel P4 possessors.

Ubuntu is supper fast, however the only problem I'm having with my new OS is with getting synaptic to update the system

I receive this error message when attempting to update the computer using Synaptic[ Synaptic manager dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem]

I'm not exactly sure what this error message is supposed to mean Synaptic was working fine until the system crashed when I was using the terminal to install a Ubuntu media player.

The installation was, almost finished. the command was open, installing the components etc. then a menu popped up asking y/n type questions, I wasn't sure which options to choose so I entered the correct command to exit the installation, then when I did the PC froze leaving no other choice but to reboot the computer during the installation. I'm guessing that might have had something to so with the error message that I'm receiving, not 100 percent sure though. any idea how to correct this error message and get the system to update will be very much appreciated other then that I had no problems what so ever with installing Ubuntu, updating the kernel installing drivers etc.

I'm also unable to update or install programs on to the computer via the command terminal here is the error message I get when trying to dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
username@linux:~ $ any suggestions on how to fix this problem will be very much appreciated

You need to do exactly what it says: go to a command terminal, and type username@linux:~$ sudo dpkg --configure -a and you should be set.

Once you've downloaded firefox-1.0.installer.tar.gz from their site, untar it in your home directory; it will make a folder called firefox-installer. Go in there and run the "firefox installer" script. That does it.

lol When Linux completes something successfully, it prints nothing. Sort of like, "Ok, I'm done, what next?".

It will usually only print something if there was an error. So congratulations, no error.
