I'm using Fedora core 3 and the initial setup for all internet programs is dreadfully slow. Evolution takes over a minute to check mail, Gaim takes forever to log into MSN. What's up?

It seems like these programms hang for about 15 seconds or so before doing anything. Evolution will open the send/recieve window and the message "waiting..." appears at the bottom. Then nothing.... (go have a coffee come back) and finally it's checked the mail.

I know it's not my provider because I have another computer running BSD & it checks mail/logs onto MSN in a flash.

I previously had the same problem with Firefox which was solved on this site (Thanks to all) by turning off IPv6 in the config. Is there anything similar that I can do for Evolution and Gaim?

do you mean turning off IPv6 in the kernel config and re-compiling the kernel?

No. Just type in about:config in the browser & turn off the option.

Check your DNS setup on the Fedora machine. That could be causing the delay.

That did it. Super thanks. In the graphical program that I use to connect to the internet I had the option "Obtain DNS from ISP" selected, but in my resolv.conf I had some DNS numbers from who knows where, but they were different than those used by my ISP. Hmmm.... strange.

Well whatever it works. Thanks. :D
