i just installed unreal tournament 2004 and for some reason when i started it up all the heads of the skins were missing you can see the skin but the head isnt there and in some frames i guess you can call it you see the head and its flattened like a pancake i tried software rendering and that solved the problem but software renering is way to slow and open gl seems to not work so well is there naother renderer i can use ?

No, there are no other renderers, at least not that I know of. SDL doesn't really count as a separate renderer, because it still uses OpenGL for the actual 3D stuff (and 2k4 may not have the SDL renderer separate like UT99 did, I'm not sure).

What video card do you use, and what chipset is it? Did you install drivers? If so, which ones?

i went to ati.com and could not find linux drivers for the ati radeon series and to be exact i have the radeon 7500 im nto srue aboutwhat chipset i have and i dont know how to change the stuff for my video card when i had kde and gnome it had that nifty gui for doing stuff like changing around the video cards im not sure if i can install the drivers anyway its only the problem in ut2004 other then thaty my computer is fine

ATI does not support any of their cards prior to the 9000 series in Linux. Your best bet is to use the xfree/xorg driver "radeon", I've heard lots of success with that on the older ATI cards

Also, make sure ut2004 is fully patched as there have been many patches that specificly address some ATI issues

one more thing :p
ut2004 is a very graphics demanding game, with a ati7500 you will have to play on the very minimum resolution. I'd suggest spending $50 or more on a decent nvidia card (as they are all fully supported under Linux)

i was thinking about that too but what gets to me is that i never had this problem before and i had ut2k4 running in debain a while ago and then i reformatted for what reason i dont remember aand i didnt have that problem and do you know how i can get the x86 radeon drivers ?

Edit your xorg.conf/XF86Config file and find the Section "Device" part. Under there you should find an option that says Driver "something". Change that to Driver "radeon" and restart X. I think that should do the trick.

And I agree with Icarus. Even my crappy FX 5200 will run UT 2004 reasonably well, although at a fairly low resolution as well. But at least its fully supported under Linux.

i put radeon down and no luck Device"
Identifier "Generic Video Card"

Sorry, it appears that I was mistaken as to the name of the driver. I don't actually use an ATI card so that was just from my memory which is obviously too small (more arriving in the mail today though:)).

I googled it and came up with a couple of other possibilities for the name of the driver. It looks like it could be either "ati" or "fglrx". I'm not sure which it should be or why people seem to be using different ones, but it appears that one of them should work for you.

nano /etc/X11/x86config

Go to the Drivers Section
and edit to

driver "fglrx"

save and exit

startx

check /var/logs/xfree86.0.log for any errors

also try "ati" or "radeon" for the driver to use

Don't think of it as 'ruining your computer' but 'learning how it works'

It's never truely broken, just needs some work :D

lol good way of looking at it

It got me this far and will probably take me further...that's probably why I like Linux, it's easy to tinker with and learn but there are so many things its difficult to learn them all

baby steps
If you fall down, just get back up
