dvd wont play audio cd

i cant get my dvd drive to play any audio cds. no sound comes out at all except from dvds. i have the audio cable hooked up. i use xmms and always before i would load /mnt/cdrom, now i try /mnt/dvd and i get nothing. i do have in my fstab /dev/hdd /mnt/dvd. grip couldnt rip any of my cd's either. it could at least get a list of the files though, and xmms could not. any ideas?

Can it see a cd with data (not audio files) on it? If not, does the manufacturer say it can read cd's?

I have a Plextor 712 DVDRW, it can play prerecorded cd's and wav files fine. It cannot play mp3's from a cd in Linux or Windows. I looked around some forums, there was some indication dvdrw's have a problem with homebrew audio cd's. But nothing real consistent as to compatability.

well this is a cd that i bought. i have played it in my car so i know it works. i just cant get any audio out of it on the dvd player. i cant even get xmms to load it

Do you have the audio cd plugin for XMMS installed? You might try another program like grip.

First have you checked your mixer settings to make sure you don't have the cd audio muted?

Next is it playing the disk and are you just not getting any sound? or is it not playing at all?

yes the first time i figured out it didnt play i was ripping, and the sound it not muted. it make a harsh metal grating noise though
