I have done forum searches and Googled and I haven't been able to find help on this particular RealPlayer problem.

I am running Mepis2004.06 with RealPlayer installed in both Firefox and Mozilla.

Both Browsers open RealPlayer in a news website to the point where the logo comes up on the screen, but then it freezes and the video doesn't play.

I am hoping that someone can point me to a fix.

Thanks, zoey

Hi Zoey. If you type 'about:plugins' (the happy face is a colon) into the address bar of your browsers does the plugins show up in the list.? I have Realplayer installed and i know there is a couple of extensions that won't work (can't recall what they are though, i'll try and find out). What site is it you are trying to view? Do the browsers work on the BBC news site for the video links?

Cheers

Yes both browsers show the plugins when I type about:plugins in the address bar.

I have tried BBC news, Fox news and CBS and in each one RealPlayer comes up, shows the news channel's logo and then freezes.

The RealPlayer is version 10.

Thanks, zoey

Check the "about plugins" page, and ensure that:
It is the only plugin registered for audio/x-pn-realaudio-plugin. RealPlayer 8, plugger, and mozplugger are things that may try to claim this mime type.
Something else to try:
Remove ~/.mozilla/pluginreg.dat to force an update of plugin registry info. And log out and back in to the desktop.

I have a Helix DNA Plugin:Realplayer G2 Plug-In Compatible.

I also have a VLC multimedia plugin.

Not really got an answer, it seemed to just work for me. The two files that came with Realplayer (in its mozilla folder).

nphelix.so
nphelix.xpt

...are they both inside the firefox plugin folder? Or linked to that folder?

Yes they are. I went in as root and copied them from Mozilla to Firefox.

Now both browsers behave the same in opeining Realplayer and then freezing.

Thanks, zoey

You could maybe try uninstalling RealPlayer 8 and installing Realplayer 10 using the downloadable .bin file. The reason i say this is because that is the version i used and everything worked no problem. I think you have done everything you need to but i don't know why it is not working. Anyway here is the link and install instructions.

From what i have read you need to uninstall RealPlayer 8 before you install 10 or it won't work.

Hope you get it solved soon.

Mepis2004.06 comes with Real Player 10 already installed so I always had it in Mozilla but it has never worked there.

Once I installed Firefox and linked it, it doesn't work there in just the same way.

Could be that I just don't get to watch news videos in Linux! I can live with it.
