gdesklets won't start

I'm trying to run gdesklets but it fails with the following message:

[petrolhead@user2-16 ~]$ gdesklets
Starting gdesklets-daemon...
Cannot establish connection to daemon: timeout!

How to fix this?

Would it be a permission problem? Is gdesklets looking for the deamon in the right place?
