Well, im trying to learn as much as I can about setting up email on my Linux box.

Anyone have recommendations on what email program to use? Im running Red Hat 7.2 and Balsa is installed as well as Mozilla.

Are there any other recommendations on email programs to use? Suggestions on installation?

Lastly, what about anti-virus stuff? Im pretty lost when it comes to Linux and anti-virus.

Thanks everyone.

my mom uses kmail. it seems to work okay. but i say just use what you like. =)

you could go with ximian's evolution...it's pretty fancy, though i've never used it...i have a hotmail account =(

sylpheed is also pretty good. I've started using Mutt which I'm happy with, but it's not as quick to setup and use as it's not gui based

If you're wanting to _learn_ about setting e-mail up, then Mutt's probably a good way to go. Once it's set up it's pretty cool, but being console based means you get down to a little more nitty gritty than with the GUI-based progs.
Other than that I would second any of the recommendations above.

As for viruses, Linux has a lot less of a problem than Windows, for some very good reasons:

1. It can't run Windows executables natively (only through WINE, DOSemu, etc)

2. All files have permissions and the executables that run have permissions. So if I run a 'virus' from my user account, I might lose my user data, but I can't jeopardise my system, because I don't have access. (Hence not using the root account all the time)

3. There is no Outlook for Linux :p

4. There is no Visual Basic for Linux :p :p

5. Becuase Linux tends to spread it usability across many programs, instead of creating one all-powerful office suite, it's a lot more difficult to write virii that affect everyone, assuming all the above fails.

Thanks guys. I appreciate your replies. I'm pretty much switching from Windows to Linux. Linux is just flat out awesome and a ton of fun. I'm still learning, but my appetite to learn is enormous.

So I thought I would take a look at some of the suggested email programs. Mutt, Kmail, Xmian(?) and sylspeed(?).

Real quickly, where can I find these at?

Thanks again guys. I do appreciate your help.
