HellO...

I got used to use my Xp as a gateway but many times suddenly it stop
forwarding the connection
sometimes it just allow www.google.com and nothing else
and in the same time i can ping sites and sending mails from my linux box

but i noticed that when this problem happen i see in My Connection details

PPP multilink framing OFF....
and i got tired trying to find from where can i change that ...
is it related to my ISP or something..??..

routing OK , pinging OK and even samba OK

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
and what about linux forwarding the connection ...
How this could be done ..?...

Buy a cheap computer, put a real modem in it. Don't need a hard disk. Download coyote linux and get a floppy. Set it up.
Check before you spend money, I'm 50% sure that Coyote supports modem connections.

I think a cheaper way would be to buy a external modem hook it up to your linux computer and use Linux as the gateway. WinXP is too buggy for my taste when you try to connect through it to a network or the web. Plus you get a more configurable firewall and lots more options as far as network tools.

Shorewall (http://www.shorewall.net/) is a nice, fast way to set up a firewall/router. Unlike most iptables frontends I have used, this one is hard as a rock and does exactly what it promises.

No pointy-clicky junk either, just a few well-commented, well-organized config files.
