my screen has been going black here lately...it will go black, i can move the mouse & it will come back for a second, then go black again, i can keep doing this, but it blacks out really fast right after i move the mouse...i ctrl+alt+backspace to leave X...then 'startx' to restart it...the problem is still there, so i have to reboot my whole machine...it REALLY SUCKS!

i have an nvidia riva tnt2 64 graphics card
i'm running freex86-4
mandrake 8.0
i'm using the nvidia 1.0-2313 drivers
the first time it did it was with something i was doing in gkrellm...i close gkrellm & it still happens...
also, opera seems to do it...
last night it did it when i had about six windows open...
today, it's been doing it with vmware express...so i don't know what's going on...
anybody have any suggestions

It did that for me for a while to. I re-installed Red Hat, then I installed Caledra when that didn't work, and it worked. Then I installed Red Hat and it works fine.

i could always try a new kernel...
i'd like to have a 2.4
i know this is a bad question, but what would be a 'good' kernel to run? 2.4.14 seemed really good, but i'll do what i must to get rid of this blasted flashing...
