I'm sorry if this is a bad question, but I need help with it.

I'm installing debian. The rescue floppy boots, the install/root floppy boots, and it works fine until I try to initialize a swap or linux partition.

When I try to on hda1, it goes
KernelPanic: Free List Corrupted

It seems to work on the other partitions, just not the first one. Is it something with the hard disk or the floppy?

I think it's a bug in that kernel.

I don't think there is a lot that can be done about it. Most of the proposed solutions that I saw on the net were not going to help. The problem is in linux/fs/buffer.c and they were talking about wierd unrelated parts of the kernel.

Newer kernels don't even have that error message so I assume the error is fixed also...

Try a different distribution or try downloading the "testing" version of debian. It's pretty close to becoming the new stable version at this point.

Here are ISOs of it. http://ftp.planetmirror.com/pub/debian-cd/unofficial/woody/i386/

or if you want here is the instructions for using the "boot floppy" approach to install. http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/dists/woody/main/disks-i386/current/

Quite frankly, the boot disk approach scares me to death. The README.txt did little to allay my fears.

If I was going to install debian I would burn the first CD and use that to install. Then I would download all the packages I wanted after that. There is no need to download all 7 iso CDs to install debian.
